Academic Advising Director directs the academic advising department, its processes, and its advisors. Works closely with academic advisors to ensure that a proactive and high-quality approach is taken with all students advising needs. Being an Academic Advising Director assists Dean or Associate Dean in the preparation and implementation of department wide goals, procedures, and controls. Analyzes existing goals and programs and recommends improvements. Additionally, Academic Advising Director requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to the associate dean. The Academic Advising Director manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes. To be an Academic Advising Director typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 to 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     SUMMARY:
    The Academic Advisor is primarily responsible for helping FVCC students with academic program exploration and academic planning. This position provides a full range of academic, transfer and career advising services for TRIO participants. This position is grant-funded and anticipated to last until 2025.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
    • Provides comprehensive academic advising services including, but not limited to, transfer and career advising, and helping students set and achieve appropriate academic goals.
    • Assists students in meeting the academic, career development, financial aid, and/or other needs which relate to academic success.
    • Provides academic advising and coaching assistance; refers students to appropriate services.
    • Provides advising support for students on academic probation and/or nearing completion or graduation.
    • Assists students in meeting the academic, career development, financial aid, and/or other needs which relate to academic success.
    • Develops academic plans, including program application process, and coaches advisees accordingly.
    • Consults with faculty on student progress and needs; serves as student advocate in appropriate instances.
    • Collaborates with other campus offices, including the Admissions & Registration Office, Financial Aid and Academic Affairs, and other campus offices to ensure coordinated delivery of student success support systems.
    • Serves as a liaison between advising and assigned academic divisions.
    • Keeps abreast of the latest developments in student services to help build strategic initiatives.
    • Attends relevant state and/or regional advising conferences.
    • Participates in department and college committees and projects.
    • Attends related trainings, workshops, and professional development.
    • Cross trains to perform other departmental and team functions; backfills for staff as needed.
    • Actively participates in the development of a climate that promotes and supports innovation and efforts to continuously improve services to students, faculty, and the College.
    • Creates and maintains a collaborative and collegial environment with colleagues and maintains effective working relationships.
    • Maintains professional ethics and confidentiality of students in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
    • Advances the mission of FVCC by serving on or convening committees and contributing to the community in college-related activities.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Reports to the Dean of Student Success.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Master’s degree in Educational Counseling, Human Resources, Career Counseling, Student Affairs in Higher Education or related degree, or Bachelor's degree in related field AND one year of related education experience; OR,
    • Bachelor’s degree in Educational Counseling, Human Resources, Career Counseling, Student Affairs in Higher Education or related degree, or Bachelor’s degree in related field AND three years of related education. experience.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Experience working within a TRIO program
    • Experience advising and teaching at the post-secondary level
    • Familiarity with the Montana University System and transfer requirements
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
    • Experience and proficiency with incorporating the use of technology to deliver academic advising services
    • Proficient computer skills and basic understanding of student information systems and Microsoft Access database system
    • Knowledge of student development and adult development theories and best practices in academic advising
    • Knowledge and skill in designing, managing, or implementation of campus programming and events
    • Ability to work within policies and procedures of FVCC
    • Demonstrated skill in creating and managing a work climate of collaboration, collegiality and team work
    • Ability to maintain effective and positive professional relationships
    • Ability to follow and issue directions
    • Demonstrated communication, technology, presentation, customer service and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds
    • Ability to intermittently work non-traditional schedules including evenings, weekends, etc.
    • Ability to maintain regular and acceptable attendance levels
    • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
    • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check
    • Ability to respond in the event of an emergency
    • This is a Medium Duty job, according to the Selected Characteristics of Occupations Defined in the Revised Dictionary of Occupational Titles, U.S. Department of Labor and Industry. Medium Duty involves exertion of 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10-25 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds continuously to move objects.
