  • The Department of Psychology is actively seeking a fulltime Academic Success Advisors to provide academic advising to undergraduate Psychology and Neuroscience students including 2800 Psychology students and 800 Neuroscience students. The Academic Success Advisor acts as a key contributor to promoting student retention and graduation, supports and advises students in making timely progress toward degree completion through a range of in-person and virtual academic advising and support strategies. The Academic Success Advisor will be working with immersion and online students directly assisting with all aspects of student life at ASU. The advisor will help students learn about ways to connect academically and through student clubs as well as prepare for career and graduate school opportunities.

    Essential Duties

    • Utilizes a proactive approach to advising Psychology and Neuroscience majors in the Department of Psychology.
    • Provides 1:1 as well as group academic advising, recruitment/retention, and academic success support functions to students to ensure ongoing successful progress to completion of degree program.
    • Utilizes eAdvisor, assists students exploring a variety of academic options, register for courses and make timely progress towards completion of degree.
    • Works closely with students to identify all academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, minors, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to student in selection of options best suited to student's goals, interests and skills.
    • Assists with academic program development and teaching.
    • Monitors student academic progress through a variety of reporting tools including eAdvisor, DARS, Salesforce, etc.
    • Acts as college/department liaison to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success.
    • Working under limited or minimal supervision, handles problems, provides guidance and advice to students.
    • Responds to student questions and concerns; works with students to resolve all issues to ensure ongoing satisfaction with program and successful progress to completion.
    • As primary liaison, connects students with academic and personal resources including, but not limited to: tutoring, counseling and career services; provides follow up to ensure satisfaction with and effectiveness of services.
    • Utilizes a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Evidence of a Master’s degree in Academic Advising, Counseling, Student Services, Higher Education or a related area within Liberal Arts and Sciences.
    • Experience in teaching and career related topics.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and methods of evidence-based academic advising strategies.
    • Experience in higher education level academic advising in an academic department.
    • Demonstrated student service orientation.
    • Experience in establishing and maintaing effective working relationships with peers, faculty, students, administration and other interested parties.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of ASU academic structure and organization.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of student information systems (DARS, PeopleSoft, Salesforce).
    • Experience in interpreting student needs and determine when referral to other University resources is appropriate.
    • Experience in demonstrating sensitivity to needs of a diverse student population.
    • Experience in designing presentation materials and giving oral presentations in group settings.
    • Experience in rapidly adapting and effectively utilizing new technology, practices, policies and methods.
    • Experience working effectively in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities.
    • Evidence of effective communication.

    Working Environment

    Uses office equipment, including a laptop and phone. Able to lift 25 pounds and get across campus. Work Schedule- Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. additionally, requires occasional weekends and evenings. Some remote work may be available after successful completion of training.
