Accounting Director directs the operations and policies of an accounting function. Implements accounting policies and procedures that adhere to governmental, financial, and tax regulations and comply with GAAP and IFRS standards. Being an Accounting Director monitors and evaluates accounting systems and processes to identify areas for improvement and optimization. Oversees overall monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes and reporting. Additionally, Accounting Director develops and directs accounting professionals and supports staff through subordinate managers. Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. May require Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Typically reports to a head of accounting. The Accounting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be an Accounting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.   • Purpose
    The Director of Accounting is responsible for the following areas:
    • Developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures that ensure accurate and timely financial statements
    • Overseeing the processing of all transactions, general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation, and the support of budget and forecast activities
    • Engaging with all aspects of the college’s finances and support the college administration in developing strategies, policies, and objectives
    • Coordinating with external consultants in developing budgets, long-range financial forecasting, and the development and processing of tax levies
    • Collaborating with our investment partners responsible for the college’s investments
    • Performing risk analysis to assess areas of improvement in all aspects of financial management, improve business processes, identify opportunities for investment, and minimize risk to the institution
    • Overseeing all aspects of the business office and provide regular reports to the cabinet

    • Principal working relationships: President, Board of Trustees, President’s Cabinet, Vice President of Academic Services, Vice President of Student Development, Associate Vice President for Institutional Resources, Executive Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Chief Advancement Officer, Chief Information Officer and Accounting and Business Office Staff.

    Primary Responsibilities:
    1. Oversee and direct all financial operations at the college.
    2. Manage accounting and business office staff.
    3. Maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
    4. Ensure an accurate and timely week, month, quarterly, and year-end close.
    5. Prepare financial statements for monthly Board meetings.
    6. Cash-flow management and projections.
    7. Budgeting and cost-control projects.
    8. Oversee all of the Accounts Payable and general accounting function.
    9. Work in partnership with the outside audit firm on all auditing and tax matters.
    10. Expense reports and cost-control/analysis work.
    11. Provide training to new and existing staff as needed.
    12. Evaluate, implement, and manage technology systems.
    13. Other duties as assigned.

    Risk-Management and Loss-Prevention Activities:
    1. Actively participate in and carry out activities in support of the college risk-management program in a capacity appropriate to this position.
    2. Monitor conditions, events, and circumstances present in the college operation to avoid potential torts or injuries to students, staff, or the general public, and then communicate observations to the appropriate supervisor and/or Risk-Management Committee.
    3. Maintain a working knowledge of the college’s emergency procedures and how to operate emergency phone systems, including internal/external call boxes.

    1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance require.   Advanced degree in accounting or finance preferred.
    2. A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years previous public accounting or accounting management experience required.
    3. Knowledge of general accounting principles.
    4. Knowledge of payroll accounting.
    5. Proficient in using automated systems.
    6. High degree of accuracy and problem-solving skills.
    7. Strong computer skills including word processing, database management, and spreadsheets.
    8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    9. Ability to work with multiple deadlines in a fast-paced setting.
    10. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
    11. The ability to communicate successfully both verbally and in writing with clients without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws.
    12. Spanish or French proficiency preferred.
    1. Basic dexterity skills (computer work, telephoning, and other office equipment).  
    2. General physical effort required includes sitting, bending, reaching, and some lifting (20 lbs. or less) and the ability to place a work order for anything over that limit.
