Executive Director, Alumni Engagement

  • The Executive Director, Alumni Engagement will lead the Alumni Engagement (AE) efforts and team for the Division of University Advancement. The incumbent will develop and manage the strategic objectives of the AE efforts, including local and national initiatives and events, alumni recognition initiatives and events, the planning and execution of comprehensive homecoming and class and affinity reunion events and activities, development and management of a comprehensive national Alumni Association network and serve as the chief liaison to the DU campus and Alumni Board. The incumbent will manage and ensure a comprehensive schedule of alumni engagement events and initiatives and shall be responsible for the specific attainment of goals and objectives related to alumni activities for the entire UA team and Alumni Association Board of Governors. In addition, this position will manage additional projects as assigned by the Senior Associate Vice President (SAVP) and Senior Vice President (SVP) of University Advancement.


    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    In coordination with the SAVP and SVP of Advancement, executes and leads AE's strategic objectives and vision related to local, national, and campus-based alumni events and activities. Current and future local alumni events and activities (Pittsburgh Zoo, Pittsburgh Pirates, Century Club, distinguished speaker series luncheons downtown, etc.), current and future national alumni events and activities (alumni chapters, admitted student receptions and send-off events, university presidential events, etc.), and campus events and activities (homecoming and family weekend, reunions, Founders week, Easter Egg Hunt, Photos with Santa, summer social gatherings for each school/college, etc.) will be developed using industry best practices, DU policies and procedures, and include critical stakeholders (DU leadership, UA team, alumni, campus partners, etc.). Will attend events and activities in the evenings and on weekends and travel locally, regionally, and nationally to support these events and activities.

    Acts as the key liaison for AE to the Alumni Board of Governors with the Board President, committees within the Alumni Board of Governors (Governance & Engagement, Executive, Volunteer Engagement, and Communications), campus partners (all Schools, Library, President’s Office, ODESI, Veterans Affairs Office, Career Development, Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, etc.)

    Directly oversee and provide leadership to a team of professional colleagues. Meet at least monthly with direct reports and the entire AE team, administer performance appraisals for the AE team, provide training and onboarding to AE team members, and provide and delegate responsibilities and projects among the AE team that will lead to the most efficient and effective results toward overall university advancement efforts.

    Other related duties as assigned and/or needed that will lead to philanthropic impact at Duquesne University.

    Completes other duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Supervises a team of Alumni Engagement employees (approximately 5 FTEs).


    REQUIREMENTS:

    Minimum qualifications:

    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

    5-8 years of experience in alumni engagement operations, preferably in higher education.

    Valid driver’s license

    Preferred qualifications:

    Master’s degree from an accredited institution.

    Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

    Knowledge of best practices in alumni engagement policies, procedures, and methods.

    Ability and willingness to travel 30% of the time locally, statewide, and throughout the US.

    Excellent organizational, project management, multi-tasking, and leadership skills.

    Exceptional communication (verbal/written), listening, and follow-through skills; collegial and respectful.

    Able to work independently within the boundaries of established University and advancement practices.

    Consistently meets deadlines/deliverables and standards for quality work.

    Entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving and demonstrated success in exceeding goals and expectations.

    Broad knowledge of fundraising principles and all aspects of the gift cycle Expertise and facility with operating systems such as Slate (or another advancement CRM), iModules, CVENT, DocuSign, and MS Office suite (especially Excel).

    Exceptional interpersonal skills

    Vigorous work ethic, sound judgment, impeccable integrity, demonstrated initiative, appropriate professional appearance, intellectual curiosity, personal and professional stamina, and the temperament to work effectively and productively with colleagues, donors, and volunteers.
