  • Position Summary

    The Program Director is responsible for the YMCA Pools and MRC programming. This position must be forward thinking in programming and organizing member focused aquatic programs. Ensuring customer service, cleanliness, safety and training requirements are met at all times.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned:

    • Administration
    • Thinks, communicates and behaves as a cause-driven leader and role model for other staff and members when it comes to desired staff behaviors; promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job-related functions.
    • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation

    in programs.

    • Recruit, employ, train and supervise necessary personnel for the YMCA pools.
    • Communicates closely with the CEO / Superintendent on all operation procedures.
    • Communicates closely with all staff.
    • Prepares program budgets and sets fees for all programs and submits them for approval.
    • Develop and update personnel and operations aquatic manuals.
    • Coordinate scheduling and usage of aquatic facility by outside groups such as swim teams, USD 418, colleges and all rentals.
    • Responsible for making sure staff on call nights, towel nights and weekend on call is covered.
    • Supervise the operation of swimming lessons programs, Safety Around Water program, exercise classes, and other special activities and events.
    • Operates and works within all budget restraints. Prepares a program report at the beginning of each program to monitor each program's ability to stay within budget.
    • Answers and handles daily calls, while promoting a positive public image for the McPherson Recreation Commission and the McPherson Family YMCA.
    • Schedule and direct all pool activities.
    • Process daily invoices and accounts receivable for all programs.
    • Compiles daily logs on program participation, staffing, chemicals and systems.
    • Orders necessary supplies, equipment and staff clothing to maintain proper inventory.
    • Compiles monthly report for commissioners and staff of all programs.
    • Assures quality pool staff through proper training and constant evaluation processes, including annual reviews.
    • Attends staff meetings and monthly program, YMCA Board and Recreation Commission meetings as needed. Responsible to review monthly financial reports to verify specific program expenditures.
    • Monitor, maintain and record accurate payroll information to assure that part time employees are paid in accordance with adopted wage rates.
    • Establish positive relationships with related college, school district, private agency and civic group leaders that allows for maximum program exposure and potential for program needs such as sponsors, volunteers, etc.
    • Expose and promote all programming opportunities for participants through efficient and timely use of all possible community media resources including flyers, radio, newspaper, brochures, public speaking, facebook, twitter and text alerts.
    • Make frequent visits to on-going programs to interact with staff, volunteers, and participants, and monitor activities in progress for use as an evaluation tool.
    • Maintain constant communication with the front desk to provide program information needed to maximize participant experience.
    • Create and staff all MRC arts and leisure activities.
    • Plan and coordinate all programming responsibilities in a fashion that allows ample time for dissemination of information to all those involved with the program.
    • Continually seek opportunities for program and activity subsidization, through business or civic group sponsorship, grant acquisition, or fund raising.
    • Provides excellent communications, both oral and written, to effectively answer and serve the public’s questions and needs.
    • Ascertain and inquire important program information through evaluations both written and oral including surverys to participants. Strives to achieve improvement in programming by reviewing other programs of similar nature in other communities.
    • Maintain knowledge of recreation philosophy, youth programming and special populations, public relations, pool operations, budgeting, accounting, billing, marketing, and brochure/newsletter design.
    • Availability to work long and non-conventional hours and schedules when needed.
    • Understand, and use correctly, chemicals used in pool - keep chemical levels in normal range.
    • Document daily chemical and maintenance system checks.
    • Manage pumps and fix/assist when needed.
    • Programming
    • Responsible for keeping pool schedules up to date.
    • Responsible for creating and directing MRC arts and leisure programming.
    • Scheduling for all pools.
    • Responsible for class and pool numbers and activity sheets.
    • Special event scheduling / organizing.
    • Maintain visibility and interaction with members and program participants.
    • Administer all staff training and orientations.
    • Coordinate facilities usage for MRC / YMCA / USD or any other necessary

    usage.

    • Monitor ongoing evaluations for programs / classes, etc.
    • Direct swim lessons and coordinator.
    • Responsible for communicating changes to the website for schedules to Senior Director.
    • Training
    • Provide staff with current training.
    • Develop and conduct regular staff trainings, including In-Service Training.
    • Develop and implement In-House Emergency Training System.
    • Train all staff in CPR / AED / First Aid and any other necessary training.
    • Keep all Aquatic staff current and up to date on trainings.
    • Maintain and coordinate all certifications.
    • Keep employee files up to date with current trainings and certifications.
    • No employee / volunteer can begin work until the employee file is complete

    and approved by the Business Office.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    Directly Supervises - Manages aquatic coordinator, lifeguards, and swim lesson instructors at the YMCA. Carry out supervisor’s responsibilities in accordance with the YMCA and MRC policies and applicable laws.

    Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    Qualifications

    • Prefer two - four years of Aquatic experience.

    • Training Requirements:
    • Must have: lifeguarding certification (ARC, YMCA); American Red Cross / ASHI First Aid & CPR for Professional Rescuer; AED; 02
    • Within 6 months of hire: YSL, LGI (ARC), YLGI
    • Within 1 year of hire: become YSL & YLG IT Trainer, and complete AFO

    Work Environment

    Some adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to blood borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, heavy equipment, excessive noise, work in confined spaces, heights, and all types of weather conditions is expected.

    Some manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, bending, kneeling, extensive walking, and the ability to operate departmental equipment is required daily in this position.
