Employees of this classification are responsible for athletic programming offered to the community, administrative and supervisory duties in indoor and outdoor athletics.  Oversight of all aspects of athletic events, tournaments, permitting and programming of indoor and outdoor spaces plus field maintenance.  This position is ultimately responsible for compliance and safeguarding permitting of City owned spaces.  
     
    Under direction of the Events, Marketing and Athletics Manager, employees of this class are expected to perform a high degree of independent judgment, initiative, and professional expertise in the day-to-day administration, daily tasks, operations, and fiscal management of assets and resources in Athletics.

    ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

    • Supervisory:  This position has responsibility for the supervision of temporary staff and/or volunteers.
    • Budgeting:  This job does not have budgetary responsibilities but carries out day-to-day activities within approved budget.
    • Strategic Planning:  This job does not have strategic planning responsibilities but carries out day-to-day activities in order to reach the stated goals and objectives.
    • Policies/Procedures:  This job has partial responsibility at the program level ranging from an understanding policies, procedures, and rules related to parks and recreation facilities and programs to ensuring compliance with them.
    • This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with Federal, State, and Local laws, rules, and regulations as well as City policies and procedures.
    • Council Communications:  This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with Federal, State, and Local laws, rules, and regulations as well as City policies and procedures.
    • Reporting:  This job does not have duties related to reporting to Federal/State/Local agencies.

    EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

    Duties range from routine/less difficult to more complex (requiring the incumbent to take initiative, make judgment calls, and make decisions for the functions/processes for which they are accountable.)
     
    • Creates, organizes, implements, and evaluates athletic activities, classes, programs, and events.
    • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
    • Assists patrons via phone and in person; provides information to the public.
    • Processes use permits and coordinates facility use schedules.
    • Monitors the use of facilities and equipment.
    • Opens and closes athletic programming and facilities as needed.
    • Oversight of RecTrac software for program area and ability to train other staff on RecTrac.
    • Performs basic facility set-up, field maintenance, and/or custodial duties daily.
    • Inspects equipment for safety.  May inspect facilities pre and post use and initiate maintenance and repairs.
    • Analyzes usage data, program evaluations, and customer service surveys to formulate program improvement strategies.
    • Collects and deposits program and permit fees.  Prepare invoices.
    • Registers participants in programs.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • Two years of college coursework in Parks and Recreation or a closely related field.
    • Two years of progressively responsible employment in the parks and recreation field. – experience in field of assignment preferred.
    • Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements. 

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS

    • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
    • Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver’s license.
    • Must have the ability to be contacted and respond in a timely manner and be willing and able to work extra hours as needed on weekends, evenings and holidays, as directed.
    • Driving on behalf of the City is an essential function of this position

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

    • Language Skills:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.   Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
    • Mathematical Skills:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
    • Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger/handle/feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand and sit, and is occasionally required to walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
    • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 
    • Vision requirements for this position include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 
    • Working conditions include occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions; working near moving mechanical parts; exposure to fumes or airborne particles; exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions; and extreme cold or heat.
    • The noise level in the work environment varies from moderate to loud.
