Legal Assistant I: Pay Range 4 - Starting salary of $39,785

Legal Assistant II: Pay Range 5 - Starting salary of $44,890

Basic Function

The PA Office of Attorney General (OAG) is looking for a detail-oriented administrative professional to join the Criminal Prosecutions Section in Pittsburgh. The Criminal Prosecutions Section investigates and prosecutes various crimes including, but not limited to, homicides, sexual assaults, theft offenses, drug offenses, and crimes involving public officials. The Legal Assistant coordinates and supports the attorneys within the Criminal Prosecutions Section.

The work performed in this position is of moderate complexity and scope. The position is responsible for supporting attorneys in the processing of legal documents required through all stages of a criminal case. This includes data entry for new cases, filing of criminal informations/documents, obtaining discovery, organizing and redacting documentary evidence, tracking statistics related to cases handled by the section, assisting in preparing cases for trial, making travel arrangements, and closing case files upon completion.

The Legal Assistant will be expected to work with considerable independence, subject to the direction of an attorney who reviews the work for timeliness and accuracy. The position will often involve handling sensitive and confidential matters.The successful candidate must be self-motivated and able to identify issues and come to reasonable resolutions.

Examples of Duties

• Assists the attorneys and Assistant Chief Deputy Attorney General of the Criminal Prosecutions Section with the management of the section operations
• Screens visitors and phone calls; referring inquiries to the appropriate person
• Obtains case documents from law enforcements agencies
• Types and electronically files Criminal Informations and other documents
• Coordinates with the attorneys to compile, redact, index, and transmit discovery packages
• Enters expenses in the Case Expense Tracking system
• Prepares and submits weekly calendars of the attorneys
• Reviews incoming mail and routes it to the proper person
• Prepares draft letters, memos, and other legal documents in appropriate format pursuant to instruction
• Prepares subpoenas as requested by attorneys
• Logs, tracks, and files all approval of case openings, case closings, criminal complaints, and plea proposals to ensure they are processed in a timely manner and are properly saved in electronic case files
• Makes travel arrangements, including overseeing the out-of-service training approval process
• Supports Grand Jury operations as needed
• Preforms other related work as required

Minimum Experience and Training

Legal Assistant I:

• Three years of responsible clerical, enforcement, or investigative work OR
• An equivalent combination of experience and training

Legal Assistant II:

• One year as a Legal Assistant I OR
• Four years of responsible clerical, enforcement, or investigative work including one year of legal clerical support experience OR
• An equivalent combination of experience and training
