The Agency of Education seeks an Assistant Director of Education Finance to fill a new role on the AOE Education Finance team. The team oversees the almost $2B education fund, special education state funding, school Medicaid, and is an integral part of the tax rate setting process for the collection of $1.5B in education taxes.
The Assistant Director will work closely with the Education Finance Director and will be expected to lead in several key functions or content areas:
This position would be expected to act as a subject matter expert in education finance and will collaborate with the Vermont Legislature, engage with other State Agencies and Departments, and act as a resource for school business officers / business managers, superintendents, and special education directors on items related to education taxation, education funding, special education, and education Medicaid. This position will often have direct contact with members of the education field, and may be asked to present on complex topics affecting education funding.
Successful candidates must demonstrate strong critical thinking and complex problem solving skills, and must have a demonstrated ability to interpret and communicate complex regulation or similar language. Candidates must have an understanding of basic accounting practices and principles, and a good understanding of mathematical principles related to accounting and budgeting.
This position offers the opportunity for significant remote work based within Vermont and contiguous states, but will require regular in-office functions as determined by the Secretary of Education.

Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting but some travel will require private means of transportation. Duties may require some time outside of normal work hours. Incumbent will be expected to testify before the Legislature and/or assist the Education Finance Director and department/agency heads in doing so.
Five (5) or more years of experience in finance, fiscal analysis, fiscal modeling, and budgeting, or related field.
Associate degree or higher in accounting, business administration, finance, economics, statistics, or related field.
Experience with program planning or evaluation.
Experience managing, supervising, or leading a team.
