  • Milwaukie’s Assistant Finance Director leads a staff of five in the Finance Department and oversees the daily financial operations of the city.   Communication, attention to detail, curiosity, and the ability to problem solve needed to excel in this role.   This position leads the annual year-end financial audit and works closely with the Finance Director on managing the budget process and setting financial policies for the city.  

    This is an exciting opportunity to work in the city’s Finance Department, a rewarding local government role that aids the community in its financial endeavors.  Over the next few years, the Assistant Finance Director will play a role in implementing the city’s strategic priorities as we identify new and interesting ways to work together across departments to improve efficiency and the services provide to the community including the implementation of new procurement software.

    • Supervise a team of dedicated and experienced staff providing contracting, procurement, accounting, business registration, utility billing, and payroll services to the city.
    • Review staff work and work papers. including oversight of Journal Entries and monthly and yearly schedules.
    • Facilitate the annual financial audit including working with stakeholders across departments to ensure adherence to financial policies and procedures.
    • Prepare financial reports and distribute, explain, and respond to related questions.
    • Audit, identify, and implement necessary financial controls to conform with regulations and city policy.
    • Handle complex customer service issues with internal and external customers.

    Required Education, Training and Experience

    (Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties of this position.  Prior work experience and educational requirements listed are typical ways of obtaining the required qualifications.  Other equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.)

     

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited four (4) year college or university; and 
    • A minimum of three (3) years of technical government budgeting and accounting experience; and
    • At least one (1) year of supervisory or managerial experience.

    Licensing/Special Requirements: 
    • Valid driver license and acceptable driving history.

    Application Timeline: This position is open until filled; however, the initial screening of candidates is planned for the week of  April 22, 2024.     Hybrid Work Options: After successful completion of probation, this position is eligible to work remotely up to one day per week in accordance with the city's telework policy 
     
    Compensation: 
    The salary range for this overtime-exempt non-represented position is $8,188 - 10,438 per month. The starting pay assignment, based on an analysis of the successful candidate's related experience and education as documented on the employment application in accordance with the city's pay equity policy and the Oregon Equal Pay Act, would be no higher than $9,942 per month.
