The University of Michigan School of Dentistry (Ann Arbor) invites qualified applications and nominations for the chair position in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Hospital Dentistry. The department chair serves as Section Head of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the Medical School.
We are searching for an outstanding associate professor or professor to be on the tenure or clinical track to lead a vibrant and nationally renowned department with modern clinical facilities. The department incorporates faculty members in the fields of Hospital Dentistry, Adult & Pediatric OMS Surgery, OMS Prosthodontics, Head & Neck Oncology & Microvascular Surgery, and Orofacial Pain.
The department chair is responsible for accomplishing the priorities set by the school based on the strategic plan and for the overall administration and leadership of the academic department, including the department's planning and goal setting, financial stewardship, and support of school and university service missions. In addition, responsibilities of the chair include supporting the department faculty members in the educational missions of the DDS program (didactic, pre-clinical and clinical education), residency and fellowship training programs in OMS Surgery a Hospital Dentistry; and enhancing outstanding post-doctoral training programs, including the general practice residency program in Hospital Dentistry and Orofacial Pain. The chair should actively promote and provide resources that enable high quality, rigorous scholarship and research by faculty, staff and trainees; and implement strategic plans to strengthen the academic and clinical missions through faculty/resident/fellow recruitments and community building.
This department is inclusive, diverse, innovative, and proactive with dedicated dentists, oral surgeons, and academicians. Examples of currently funded research projects include treatment modalities and outcomes of OMS surgeries, validation and assessment of efficacy of a new anesthesia simulation training curriculum for OMS, understanding the impact of dental disease and treatment on infective endocarditis, an opioid analgesic reduction trial, and an impacted 3rd molar extraction study. There is sustained collaborative multidisciplinary research within the department and external to the department, within the university and beyond.
The successful candidate must hold a DDS/DMD or equivalent, which can be complemented by MS and PhD degrees. A medical degree is not required but is considered. Candidates must be eligible for an unrestricted Michigan dental license, and credentialing with the Michigan Medicine health system.
