    Position Duties / Responsibilities

    The General Librarian performs a broad range of responsibilities. This is considered an entry-level position with an eye towards specialization in another area of the library.

    The General Librarian will :

    • Supports the Public Service Department by participating in the reference desk rotation for on-site and virtual reference service.
    • Assists the Technical Services Department with the maintenance of the library catalog, updating and correcting electronic resource data, performing scheduled reports, and tracking usage statistics.
    • Provides patrons and staff with assistance to hardware, software, and library resources.
    • Produces and maintains library-related Internet content, such as Libguides.
    • Designs and composes written reports for the library, University, and accreditation agencies as needed
    • Collaborates with other library staff by producing library policies and procedures and participating in special projects and initiatives
    • Serves on committees at the University and State level
    • Meets University requirements for tenure and promotion, as well as other University policies
    • Commitment to professionalism through membership and service in library associations, professional conferences, continuing education, and staying informed of library trends and technological developments
    • Maintains a collegial environment within a diverse university community that includes faculty, students, library staff, and other members of the university community, members of the profession, and the general public.
    • Open and close the library on occasion.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Appointment is at the rank of Assistant Professor; This position is eligible for promotion and tenure.

    Required / Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution required, or enrolled in a such a program with an expected graduation by May .
    • Prior experience working in an academic library required.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office or related office software suite.
    • Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of people.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
    • Physically capable of retrieving library materials from multiple locations, pushing loaded book carts, and lifting twenty pounds.
