Assoc. Professor - Sociology teaches courses in the discipline area of sociology. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Assoc. Professor - Sociology provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Assoc. Professor - Sociology typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. The Behavioral Sciences department at SUNY Orange is currently seeking individuals to teach the following Sociology courses for the Spring 2024 semester:
Introduction to Sociology (SOC 101) - This course explores those forces in our culture and social structure that lie beyond the individual's control or direct awareness, but which shape what we are, how we behave, and what we think. Basic sociological concepts are used to develop insights and understanding. Topics such as culture, social structure, socialization, social control, groups, stratification, research methods and statistical analysis are discussed.
Social Problems (SOC 120) - Using primarily a scientifically and statistically based sociological perspective, a variety of American social problems are examined. Included are the increasing levels of interpersonal violence and other types of deviant behavior, racism and sexism, threat of war, poverty and the welfare system, and the consequences of economic inequality. Analysis of these problems includes description, causative relationships, individual and societal dimensions, and alternative social policy responses.
Teaching assignments may be on the Middletown, Newburgh or both campuses. This is a part-time teaching role where the instructor will teach and assess in person sections of Sociology.
Education Required: Master's degree in the discipline for the course. (i.e. Sociology or Social Work)
Experience Required: Expertise in issues of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice.
