Associate Dean of Law assists Dean with the management of administrative functions of the college of law. Collaborates with Dean on planning college strategic initiatives and supports on college fundraising. Being an Associate Dean of Law provides administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Typically requires an advanced degree. Additionally, Associate Dean of Law typically reports to a Dean. The Associate Dean of Law typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. To be an Associate Dean of Law typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.     General Statement: The Dean of Students shall concentrate on school climate and culture; fulfilling the school mission “to create a culture of personalized learning with high expectations that enables all students to become lifelong learners.”
    The position is responsible for monitoring and directing all student discipline procedures and behavior guidelines, including, but not limited to, enforcement of rules and regulations, at all school-sponsored events on school grounds, and oversight of student deportment, with a view to maintaining a culture of courtesy, focused academic achievement, and mutual respect on the part of students, and harmonious interaction by students with one another, with staff members, with school guests, and with the community at large. This position will support school administration’s efforts to create a safe and orderly learning environment resulting in improved teacher and student performance and as such serves as an integral part of the teacher evaluation support team designed to allow the school principal and assistant principals’ time to evaluate teachers annually.

    Responsibilities:

    • Coordinate with the school principal and other school leaders in the design and implementation of the teacher evaluation system.
    • Implement district and school wide positive behavior initiatives
    • Monitor school corridors, other common areas, school grounds, school events, and, as appropriate, classrooms, for incidents of student conduct warranting intervention.
    • Monitor and supervise student lunch periods including the cafeteria/ lunchrooms.
    • Monitor, supervise and direct student bus transportation at Westerly High School.
    • Monitor student conduct at school events, as assigned and as otherwise appropriate.
    • Implement, in conjunction with appropriate staff members, Response to Intervention and other behavior-related programs, procedures, methods and guidelines.
    • Prepare and deliver presentations to school staff, the School Committee, and other appropriate groups regarding student conduct, discipline and safety topics and procedures.
    • Interact with staff members and assist, direct, and coach staff regarding discipline procedures and guidelines, generally and for specific incidents.
    • Implement and supervise fire, lockdown, student intrusion crisis, evacuations, and other safety drills.
    • Interact with Town and state safety and judicial personnel regarding issues of student discipline and safety.
    • Review and monitor the success of anti-bullying initiatives, and prepare appropriate recommendations for modification of such initiatives.
    • Enforce rules and guidelines related to student civil rights, due process and privacy.
    • Periodic review and update of school disciplinary rules and guidelines, including those in the Student Handbook.
    • Enforce the student dress code and reasonable guidelines and standards of student attire.
    • Monitor school discipline for consistency, reasonableness and fairness.
    • Participate in school task forces, study groups, committees, and panels, as appropriate, including, but not limited to, those related to student conduct, emergency protocols and student wellness.
    • Ability to serve as a member of the leadership team of the High School, by working collaboratively, constructively and cooperatively with the members of the Administrative team in addressing the ongoing needs, challenges, and opportunities arising in connection with the school on an ongoing basis.
    • Attend evening meetings as appropriate.
    • Knowledge of, and facility with, use of computers and of Microsoft Office software.
    • Communicate and interact with students, faculty and parents in intervention and in student crisis situations.
    • Work with a culturally, economically, ethnically and linguistically diverse student population in a welcoming, supportive and respectful manner.
    • Perform any other leadership responsibilities as assigned by the High School Principal, the Superintendent of Schools and/or by their designees.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience:
    • Minimum of five (5) years successful experience in teaching or administration prefered.
    • Education:
    • Bachelor’s Degree required.
    • Certification & Licensing:
    • Trained and certified (or willing to become so trained and certified) in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, in first aid \ emergency procedures (e.g., Heimlich maneuver) and in operation of automatic external defibrillator (AED) devices.
    • Trained in CPI Techniques
    • An appropriate Rhode Island Teacher’s Certification preferably in grades 5-8.
    • Authorized to work in the USA
    • Current national background check without disqualifying results at time of hire.
