    Position Overview
    : As a Government and Economic teacher, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the intellectual and civic development of our students. You will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging lessons that provide a comprehensive understanding of government structures, economic principles, and their real-world applications. By fostering an environment of inquiry and debate, you will inspire students to critically analyze political and economic issues and develop their own informed perspectives.

    Responsibilities:

    • Duties include: providing instruction in government, economics, and AP Micro and Macro economics. In addition to serving as an advisor to approximately 15 High School students; fostering a nurturing, challenging, and supportive classroom environment that emphasizes mutual respect, prepares students to continue their Social Studies education in HS, and positions students for a lifelong love of learning.

    • DECA advisor/ mentor that includes attendance at all competition events

    • Social Studies department members are expected to actively pursue professional development in the areas of pedagogy, teaching techniques, and technology relevant to the field and subject in order to provide students with a learning experience of the highest quality.

    • All teachers will monitor and report on the performance of students and coordinate with administration, teachers, and parents to address concerns and correct problems should they arise.

    • Other general supervisory duties throughout the school day, as assigned by the Division Directors.


    In addition, all Canterbury faculty member responsibilities include:

    • Supporting Canterbury School’s Mission to “promote the total development of each child in his or her intellectual, physical, social and spiritual growth”

    • Implementing lesson plans effectively

    • Supervising students when in your care

    • Interacting appropriately with parents

    • Sponsoring student groups and activities

    • Professional development, department meetings and faculty meetings

    • All other responsibilities as outlined in the faculty handbook


    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or higher (Education or related field is preferred)

    • Significant experience teaching Social Studies at this age level

    • Understanding of AP level requirements in high school Social Studies

    • Excellent verbal communication skills and organizational skills

    • Outstanding written skills for communication and documentation

    • Flexibility, tact and grace in talking with parents

    • Ability to work successfully with colleagues as part of a team

    • Knowledge of developmental, social and emotional needs of middle school students

    • Excellent communication skills with students and parents

    • Experience in and commitment to developing one’s own cultural competency and seeking, continually, greater levels of diversity, equity and inclusion in practices and curricula

    • Familiarity with classroom technology is preferred

    • Professionalism, sense of humor, and a student centered approach
