Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Athletic Trainer occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     The Certified Athletic Trainer specializes in the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries that occur during school sport or physical activities. Our field Certified Athletic Trainers work closely with team coaches in developing and implementing a program of conditioning for athletes.
    Job Responsibilities & Duties Include, but are not limited to:
    • Providing athletic training services for a designated school, middle school, and/or community outreach settings
    • Provide athletic training services to community sporting events, when assigned
    • Promote safe and appropriate practice and competition
    • Assist with pre-participation examinations to ensure that required documentation is in place
    • Assist and advise athletic team coaches in planning and instructing injury prevention programs for student athletes
    • Provides standard immediate care procedures used in emergency situations, independent of setting
    • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, parents, coaches, athletic trainers, medical personnel, and the public.
    • Instruct athletes, parents, coaches, medical personnel, and other community members in proper care and prevention of athletic injuries.
    • Performs clinical injury evaluation and assessment of patient's level of function and follows standardized clinical practice in the area of diagnostic reasoning and medical decision making.
    • Determines appropriate therapeutic treatment and provides rehabilitation, and/or reconditioning strategies, and taping/wrapping and bracing for preventative and protective treatment.
    • Collaborates with supervising physician, recommends discontinuation of the athletic training service when patient has received optimal benefit of the rehabilitation and treatment program.
    • Performs baseline concussion testing and additional testing if a concussion is sustained or suspected. Confirm appropriate follow-up of return to play guidelines.
    • Determines return to play standards of injuries for athletes and the active population.
    • Ensures an Emergency Action Plan be put in place and discussed with the school's Athletic Director, coaches, and athletes; including local EMS.
    • Maintain daily records of treatment logs, injury reports, doctor's referrals, and medical inventory management used for the care of athletes according to clinic standards.
    • Complete set-up of all practice and games including medical supplies, fracture management equipment, hydration, cryotherapy, and any other supplies needed for adequate coverage.
    • Mentor and manage on site education of students enrolled in University-based athletic training education programs or any other healthcare professionals at outreach events.
    • Design and implement injury prevention, performance enhancement, and wellness programs for the physically active.
    • Comply with OSHA blood borne pathogen standards.
    • Keep athletic training room and clinical area safe, clean, and organized.
    • Demonstrate interpersonal skills required to work effectively with players, coaches, and other team personnel.
    • Participate in select community service/educational programs related to sports medicine.
    • Perform other duties as assigned or required by Director and/or Sports Medicine Physician.

    Required Licenses and Certifications
    • National Athletic Training Certification (ATC) through the Board of Certification, Inc.
    • Alabama Licensed or eligible to obtain license within a reasonable time frame
    • Current CPR Certification

    Education
    • Bachelor's degree required
    • Master's degree preferred

    Work Experience
    • Minimum three (3) years athletic training experience in a sports environment is preferred
