Attorney is responsible for using specialized knowledge of national, state, and/or local laws to advise and represent clients and organizations in criminal or civil proceedings and other legal matters. Provides legal advice and counsel in support of business activities and transactions. Being an Attorney researches and interprets existing laws and regulations and anticipated changes to laws to guide informed decisions and reduce risk. Prepares and reviews various agreements, contracts, and other legal documents. Additionally, Attorney represents the organization in litigation, negotiations, and other matters where legal counsel is required. May have a billable hours requirement. Requires a JD. Requires State Bar membership. Typically reports to a manager. The Attorney work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role.     This position will perform professional legal and advisory services to accomplish effective representation of state, county, and county personnel.   The required amount of experience will impact the assignment of level (Entry/ Intermediate/ Senior) along with the complexity of cases and advisory services assigned.
     
    May be assigned to either the civil or criminal division depending upon qualifications of the successful applicant.

    Civil division: Responsibility of child protection cases, guardianships and commitments, contract review, county real estate work, juvenile delinquency, and other general civil assignments.

    Criminal division: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to prosecuting petty misdemeanor, misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, and felony offenses occurring within Itasca County.  This position may be responsible for criminal appeals, law enforcement training, and education with other justice partners from time to time. 
     
    Must have:
    • Graduation from an accredited college of law.
    • Licensed and admitted to practice law in the State of Minnesota within first year of employment.
    • Valid driver’s license and reliable means of transportation.
    • Successful completion of a criminal background check and Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board check, all contingent upon a job offer.
    • Knowledge of: the principles of criminal and civil law and their application; legal research methods; the United States and Minnesota Constitution; trial procedure and the rules of evidence; administrative law.
     
    Nice to have:
    • Work experience as a practicing attorney, county attorney, assistant county attorney, full-time prosecutor, public defender.
