Requires State Bar membership. Typically reports to a manager. The Attorney work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. Deputy District Attorney

  • SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

    The Deputy District Attorney provides a wide variety of highly complex and specialized professional legal services. The incumbent must be bondable. Employees of the District Attorney’s Office are mandatory reporters per NRS 432B.220.

    Normal working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the understanding these hours are subject to change effective July 1, 2022, per AB424 which states Nevada must have bail hearings within 48 hours.

     ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions:

    • Reviews law enforcement reports, draft charging, and related documents.
    • Advises law enforcement on legal questions. Observes law enforcement interviews as needed.
    • Prepares adult and juvenile cases for court hearings. 
    • Prosecutes cases before family court, justice, and district courts. 
    • Attends specialty courts (i.e. Adult Drug Court, Family Preservation Court, etc.)
    • Draft and presents appellate briefs and arguments before the Nevada Appellate Court and the Nevada Supreme Court  
    • Periodic travel to outlying justice courts in Carlin, Wells and Wendover. Company vehicle provided.
    • Attends meetings, conferences and trainings as requested which may include travel. 
    • Analyzes cases and applicable laws, codes, and regulations to formulate negotiated offers and sentencing recommendations.
    • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the latest information, techniques, and developments in the legal field.
    • Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.
    • Juris Doctorate required
    • Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
    • Must maintain a valid Nevada driver's license

    An employee in this position must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:

    Knowledge

    • Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and practices of legal research. 
    • Working knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and regulations. 
    • Working knowledge and correct usage of business English including spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and formats.
    • Working knowledge of business correspondence formats, record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records management techniques.
    • Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software including case management software programs, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases for the purposes of creating, editing, and distributing information.
    • Thorough knowledge of all applicable federal and state laws and regulations, county ordinances and regulations, department rules and regulations, and relevant court rulings.

    Skills 

    • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Understanding and carrying out complex written and oral communications.
    • Demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills especially in dealing with the public.
    • Negotiating as a method of securing support, concurrence, acceptance, or compliance.

    • Using the tools and equipment listed below.

    An employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:

    • Work is performed in an office and court room setting. 
    • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand or walk.
    • The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 40 pounds. 
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
    • Environment is generally clean with limited exposure to conditions such as dust and fumes. 
    • Tools and equipment used include personal computer, case management software, printer, scanner, telephone, copy machine, fax machine and other associated office equipment. 
    • Incumbent will occasionally be asked to travel in a passenger vehicle.
