Attorney is responsible for using specialized knowledge of national, state, and/or local laws to advise and represent clients and organizations in criminal or civil proceedings and other legal matters. Provides legal advice and counsel in support of business activities and transactions. Being an Attorney researches and interprets existing laws and regulations and anticipated changes to laws to guide informed decisions and reduce risk. Prepares and reviews various agreements, contracts, and other legal documents. Additionally, Attorney represents the organization in litigation, negotiations, and other matters where legal counsel is required. May have a billable hours requirement. Requires a JD. Requires State Bar membership. Typically reports to a manager. The Attorney work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role.     Georgia Legal Services Program is a leader in creating equal access to justice and opportunities out of poverty for low-income Georgians. We fight for justice where it is most needed. Georgia Legal Services seeks a staff attorney to work in its Columbus office.


    PRIMARY DUTIES:

    • Litigate cases in administrative, state and federal forums.
    • Draft briefs, motions and memoranda.
    • Circuit riding to assigned counties.
    • Conduct community legal education sessions and engage in outreach activities.
    • Participate on action teams that explore and solve systemic issues affecting clients.


     


     

    Requirements

    • Graduate of an accredited law school and current member of Georgia Bar with experience working with persons with low incomes and a commitment to social justice.
    • Willingness and ability to work as part of a team in a professional and collaborative manner.
    • Computer literacy, which includes familiarity using email, Excel, Word, SharePoint, LegalServer, and other computer programs.
    • Must have reliable transportation and a valid Georgia driver's license.
    • Ability to speak Spanish is highly valued.
    • Demonstrated interest or experience working with low-income clients on poverty law issues and commitment to social justice;
    • Ability to work with diverse populations, backgrounds and perspectives;
    • Excellent oral advocacy, research, and writing skills;
    • Attention to detail and self-motivated;
    • Ability to be creative and a team player.

     

    Salary and Benefits: 

      The salary range is $58,250-$77,200, and can be higher depending upon experience and qualifications.  . The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, paid time off including parental leave; birthday holiday; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 per month deductible); 403B with 3% match; Georgia Bar dues and CLE expenses. GLSP offers a hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to management approval and a probationary employment period.
