Attorney is responsible for using specialized knowledge of national, state, and/or local laws to advise and represent clients and organizations in criminal or civil proceedings and other legal matters. Provides legal advice and counsel in support of business activities and transactions. Being an Attorney researches and interprets existing laws and regulations and anticipated changes to laws to guide informed decisions and reduce risk. Prepares and reviews various agreements, contracts, and other legal documents. Additionally, Attorney represents the organization in litigation, negotiations, and other matters where legal counsel is required. May have a billable hours requirement. Requires a JD. Requires State Bar membership. Typically reports to a manager. The Attorney work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. Essential Job Functions:
1. Drafts all sorts of legal documents preparing form motions, pleadings, and briefs.
2. Works independently gathering relevant facts and data.
3. Summarizes and coordinates legal documents and performs legal and record research. Checks legal forms for accuracy.
4. Transcribes dictation including legal opinions, briefs, memos, subpoenas, and other related legal documents
5. Maintains legal files and filing/tracking systems on all court cases, appeals, invoices, and billings.
6. Logs opinions, orders, and other court decisions and perform necessary docketing.
7. Processes legal forms to implement court orders and proceedings.
8. Greets general public and assists them with paperwork and qualifying process.
9. Opens mail and replies to routine correspondence.
10. Answers telephone and takes messages or transfers calls to proper individuals.
11. Interacts with public, clients, and other internal departments.
12. Attends court hearings to record dispositions
13. Distributes files for pre-trial conferences and assists attorneys with preparation of hearings/trial information.
14. Maintains department files in an up-to-date manner, as required.
15. Processes dismissal and expungement documents.
16. Types letters, reports, memos, and other documents required by the victim witness advocates.
17. Assists victim witness advocates in contacting victims and requesting restitution.
18. Attends court hearings to ensure restitution is ordered when appropriate and to assist with victims/witnesses when necessary.
19. Maintains the victim witness database; as well a enters victim/witness data into the Prosecutors Management System.
20. Prepares victim/witness folders.
21. Contacts law enforcement to acquire victim information.
22. Maintains the Forensic Rape database.
23. Completes 10 hours of victim advocate training per year.
Other Duties:
1. Performs duties of other support staff in their absence.
2. Prepares and submits bills, claims, or reports as required.
3. Notarizes criminal documents.
4. Compiles data within department for completion of reports.
5. Performs other job-related duties as required.
