We are looking for a Director of Engineering with broad experience in application development that can lead a team of developers in building a new digital experience platform that will support our suite of sustainability products and services.

This position is open to candidates ideally based within a commutable distance of our San Francisco, CA, Portland, OR, New York, NY or Portland, ME offices, where you can enjoy a flexible, hybrid-working pattern. Exceptional candidates based remotely in other parts of the USA, will be considered. Please Note: 3Degrees does not provide sponsorship and /or relocation assistance, therefore pre-existing right to work status is a prerequisite in order to be considered for this position.

    WHAT YOU’LL DO

This role is designed as a “ground-floor” startup-like leadership position which requires a comfort level of wearing multiple hats – frequent discussions about feature priorities, defining best software architectures, coding, managing external development partners, team building, etc. – while delivering high execution fidelity. You will be working alongside the project and product management team to continually align the product’s direction to the business requirements.

    • Set the technical direction for the platform and build/lead a team of internal and external developers to execute its successful delivery
    • Lead/assume coding responsibility for core platform capabilities transitioned from external development contractors; optimize integration with back-end systems (e.g., Mulesoft, CRM, NetSuite) for performance, security, reliability and scalability; develop and direct the platform’s UI/UX front-end for an engaging and easy-to-use digital experience
    • Partner with the product management team to develop phased release schedules, and make key feature trade offs to meet time-to-market, cost, scalability, and performance expectations in alignment with business needs
    • Act as technical lead for 3rd-party development and ecosystem partners
    • Lead regular development code reviews and interface regularly with cross-functional teams (e.g., product management, the executive team, et.al.) during operations readouts on the health and status of product development
    • Coach and mentor development team members to drive and reinforce 3Degrees’ culture and values
    • Stay on the forefront of the latest tools, technologies, and strategies and help evaluate, prototype, and introduce them to our team or through our platform towards improving our customers’ experience and/or 3Degrees’ mission

    ABOUT YOU

You are a hands-on technology leader, someone with a demonstrated history of stewardship and working cross-functionally with multiple departments on complex projects. You possess strong communication skills with the ability to clearly describe technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, both verbally and in writing.

    • A strong coder at heart with 10 years demonstrated successes building and maintaining both web and mobile applications using common languages (e.g., Python, JS), cross-platform frameworks (e.g., React, React Native), API-based/middleware integrations with database servers and 3rd-party applications, and versioning control – preferably for one or more marketplace applications
    • Experience with cloud-based XaaS offerings, scale-up/scale-out architectures
    • Experience with ERP integrations via MuleSoft for workflow creation and 3rd-party application integration, Tableau for data queries and visualization, and Snowflake for data warehousing
    • Understanding of blockchain, including distributed data stores, tokenization, consensus protocols, and smart contracts a plus
    • 3 years strong leadership experience building and managing high-performance software development teams across architecture, core development, and devtest/QA
    • Expert at and employment of agile development methodologies
    • Startup mentality and willingness to fail; bias for action and commitment to achieving results; ability to make decisions with varying degrees of uncertainty, and quickly course-correct when needed

    HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS

    Within 30 days

    • You will focus on becoming familiar with 3Degrees’ internal systems and with the business requirements of the project, and leverage that to begin working with contractors to set a technical direction and vision for the platform
    • You will flesh out headcount requirements towards transitioning contracted development as appropriate

    Within 90 days

    • You will have made meaningful progress toward delivering on the platform’s MVP, and charting a course for the platform’s roadmap, partnering with the product management team
    • You will have worked with HR partners to start hiring against your headcount plan

    Within 6 months

    • You will have prioritized and scheduled the tasks and major deliverables in the product roadmap and led a team of external contractors through multiple sprints
    • You will be the de facto technical owner of the platform and the go-to internal resource for questions or updates regarding ongoing or upcoming development
    • You will also be the go-to resource to evaluate 3rd-party integrations that may advance the breadth of platform services

    Within 1 year

    • You will lead the entire technical development organization - internal and external - for 3Degrees
