Campus Police Officer conduct patrols on campus to ensure security of buildings, students and staff. Responds to requests for assistance and emergencies. Being a Campus Police Officer enforces vehicle and traffic regulations. Investigates crimes. Additionally, Campus Police Officer may conduct educational activities related to safety and crime prevention. Typically require associate degree in criminal justice. May require POST(Peace Office Standards and Training) certification. Typically reports to Police Supervisor. The Campus Police Officer occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Under general supervision, performs routine and critical duties involving a wide range of public services, crime prevention and apprehension, traffic enforcement, criminal investigation, City Ordinance, State and Federal law enforcement, and corrections functions as assigned. Performs related work as required.
The police officer makes independent, critical decisions which impact the lives and property of members of the public, as well as other members of public safety agencies.
Officers are called upon to solve a broad scope of problems within the community, often relying on the ability to identify community resources, ranging from domestic difficulties within the home, to effectively combat criminal elements.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
1. patrol in a vehicle or on foot within the City to provide a visible prevention profile to deter criminal conduct, traffic offenses and other public hazards
2. provide a rapid response in time of emergency or when otherwise dispatched to a call for assistance or a crime complaint
3. frequent personal contact with the public
4. take complaint reports
5. conduct investigations
6. mediate disputes
7. assist people generally
8. resolve domestic quarrels
9. initiate help for the mentally ill
10. counsel persons in crisis
11. effect arrests
12. regulate conduct
13. care for the ill and injured as an emergency first responder
14. function as a corrections specialist in the City Jail as necessary
15. provide temporary relief to Communications Officers
16. assist other City and governmental agencies as needed
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS
1. have the ability to communicate very effectively with the public
2. ability to quickly size up complex situations involving the public safety and make rapid, sound decisions
3. thorough knowledge of laws and their application within the framework of limitations imposed by department and public policy, as well as the judiciary

5. well-developed ability to drive a vehicle under adverse conditions
6. ability to use a variety of defensive weapons and tactics
