    Job Summary:
    The Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness provides visionary and strategic leadership, supervision, and management of Campus Recreation programs and facilities, including services/operations, activities, events, indoor and outdoor facilities/fields, marketing and communications, budgetary/fiscal management including revenue generating services, staffing/supervision, general administration and risk management. Programs include intramurals and club sports; individual and group fitness; aquatics; outdoor adventure activities including the challenge course and Frisbee golf course; and pre-orientation adventure experiences for new students.

    The Director inspires and cultivates with campus partners a comprehensive recreation and wellness program in accordance with The Furman Advantage, ensuring Furman students and the campus community in general have opportunities to develop and maintain healthy, active lifestyles. In order to ensure that the student programming is in full alignment with broader campus initiatives and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, the Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness reports to the Associate Dean of Student Involvement and Engagement.

    Responsibilities:

    Strategic Oversight and Supervision

    Supports the vision, mission, and values of Furman University to create a vibrant campus in which students enjoy a broad experience within a close-knit community.

    Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates three full-time professional staff and part-time Rugby coach. Indirectly responsible for several part-time fitness staff, lifeguards, club sports coaches, referees and student employees. Strategic oversight for employee onboarding and credentialing and professional development specific to the department.

    Develops and implements a campus recreation and wellness strategic plan that aligns with The Furman Advantage (TFA) pillars: belongingness, health and wellbeing, student success, engaged learning, campus vibrancy/social life and the incorporation and expansion of tenets of Furman's diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) plan.

    Responsible for the operations and management of the Physical Activities Center (PAC), two intramural fields, the Roberts Rugby Pitch, low ropes/challenge course, the Furman Outdoors Club (FUOC) storage/social space, and a 9-hole Frisbee golf course.

    Oversees department learning outcomes and assessment. Tracks building and program utilization data. Monitors participation trends to ensure that offered activities reflect student as well as other Furman constituencies' interest. Uses data to manage the appropriate level of public access to the PAC. Designs and implements assessment of student engagement and outcomes aligned with The Furman Advantage.

    Building Management and Partnerships

    Serves as primary building manager for the PAC, working collaboratively with Health Sciences, Summer Programs, Military Science, Sports Medicine, and Athletics to schedule the fitness center, lap and therapy pools, gymnasium and dance/fitness studio to coordinate facility use.
    • Oversees a comprehensive schedule including academic semesters, winter break, summer, exam periods, holidays and spring break.
    • Uses 25Live for scheduling.
    • Academic classrooms and labs are scheduled by the academic departments and Enrollment Services.

    Serves on the PAC Partners Committee with the Health Sciences Chair, Military Science Chair, IACH Executive Director, Sports Medicine director, and Associate Dean of Student Involvement and Engagement. The Committee is co-chaired by the AVP/Dean of Students and the Dean of Faculty.

    Directly responsible for the management of the fitness center, lap and therapy pools, gymnasium and dance/fitness studio. Maintains risk management protocols for these facilities. Oversees staff who are responsible for the coordination of the card access/customer management system (Fusion).

    Responsible for purchase, maintenance and repair of fitness center and dance/studio equipment, club and intramural sports equipment, and student rental programs.

    Serves on the Employee Wellness Committee.

    Partners with Human Resources to facilitate employee and employee dependents access to the fitness center, lap pools, gymnasium and dance/fitness studio.

    Manages public memberships for the fitness center, lap pools, gymnasium and dance/fitness studio as a revenue source.

    Serves on the Student Health and Wellbeing Committee, and partners with the Student Health and Wellbeing Coordinator on services and programs for students.

    Campus Recreation, Wellness and Student Involvement

    Maintains risk management protocols for all Campus Recreation and Wellness activities and programs following best practice models of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) and the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS).

    Works collaboratively with the Office of Student Involvement and Inclusion, Housing and Residence Life, the Center for Inclusive Communities, Office of Spiritual Life, Mentoring and Advising, and Student Life to create a campus recreation program that is vibrant, promotes wellness and wellbeing, creates opportunities for all students to feel a sense of belongingness, and contributes to the personal and interpersonal (thrive and connect) development of students as promised by The Furman Advantage (TFA).

    Provides students and all users with a positive recreational experience focused on healthy behavior and individual wellbeing through recreational activity programs.

    Serves as advisor to the Club Sports Council, the umbrella organization for all club sports teams on Furman's campus. Facilitates the allocation of the Student Government Association (SGA) student activities fee to individual club sports teams. Attends meetings, advises leadership in the general operation of the council, conducts regular leadership training, serves as fiscal advisor, and generally advises the council in its ongoing duties in support of the club sports program. Develops a strategic plan to enhance the overall club sport experience.

    Oversees staff who are responsible for the intramurals programs, new student pre-orientation programs, and advising the Furman Outdoors Club (FUOC).

    Provides student employees with leadership development, personal learning, teambuilding, and shared goal-oriented opportunities.

    General Administration

    Provides fiscal oversight for all departmental operational expenditures and revenue generation, including procurement of equipment and outsourced services. Oversees student activity fee allocations. Responsible for overall budget generation and management.

    Leads, supervises and has general oversight for the content and maintenance of the Campus Recreation websites.

    Attends regional and national conferences and certification programs to ensure professional competencies remain aligned with duties, to identify trends and needs to continuously improve programming and services for the campus community. Maintains volunteer activities with professional association(s), as appropriate and with supervisor approval.

    Serves in the professional on-call rotation for Student Life.

    Serves on University committees as assigned.

    Completes performance review process with supervisor and employees to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and university goals.

    Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor in support of the goals and objectives of the Division of Student Life, and the University.     Responsibility for Final Decisions:

    Direct supervision of three full-time employees and one part-time Rugby coach. Indirectly responsible for several part-time fitness staff, lifeguards, club sports coaches, referees and student employees.

    Reviews work to ensure compliance with procedures and deadlines.

    Spends time planning, scheduling, and assigning priorities of several ongoing assignments.

    Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.

    Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections.

    Reports To: Associate Dean of Student Involvement and Engagement

    Work is performed independently on routine work, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.

    Education/Skill Requirements:

    Master's degree in Recreation/Sports Management, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or related field preferred.

    Minimum of five years of progressive professional experience within a campus recreation, student union, student activities or wellness organization required.

    Demonstrated knowledge of national trends/best practices in campus recreation and wellness.

    Demonstrated significant supervisory, risk management, and budgetary management.

    Demonstrated knowledge of the importance of health, wellness, recreation, and fitness to a campus community, as well as an understanding of the theories, principles, and practices of student development, and higher education administration.

    Excellent customer service skills.

    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, conflict resolution skills, leadership skills, and strong work ethic required.

    Must have the ability to prioritize tasks, meet realistic deadlines, and operate within specific budget restraints.

    Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

    Facility management experience preferred. Facility renovation experience preferred.

    Understanding of the importance of student learning outcomes and assessment preferred.

    Understanding of Fusion membership management system preferred.

    Certification in CPR/First Aid will be required upon employment.

    Lifeguarding certification preferred.

    Work Conditions:

    Work is typically performed under usual office conditions. Work may include:
    • Frequent varied weather conditions.
    • Occasional exposure to crisis situations.
    • Frequent pushing and pulling of sports equipment.
    • Frequent lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
