The Student Affairs and Success Division includes Career Success, the Student Success Resource Centers, Dean of Students, Student Conduct, and Student Health, which all provide direct services and resources to students, and the Student Success Equity Research Center (SSERC), which provides data, research, and evaluation support for the campus and manages the adviser case management, early alert, and predictive analytics systems that are part of the student success initiatives.

    JOB SUMMARY

    Along with the Executive Director, Business Analyst, and Director of Student Employment and Experiential Learning, the Associate Director, Career Engagement works as part of the Leadership Team and helps to establish long-range planning, design, and implementation of Career Success. The incumbent applies solid knowledge of Career Success management systems to suggests changes or improvements as appropriate. Participates in the development, implementation, review, and evaluation of career engagement programs and services.

    The Associate Director, Career Engagement establishes the strategy of career engagement-related initiatives and supervises the career engagement team which is focused on building partnerships with academic divisions, colleges, campus partners, and partners in industry in an effort to create a robust pipeline for career opportunities for students. The incumbent develops strategies to serve emerging student populations, delivers career education information in ways that resonate with today's students and helps to infuse career readiness into the UCSC culture.

    APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    Budgeted Salary: $82,300 - $86,500 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
    Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. The salary shown above is the budgeted range the University reasonably expects to pay.

    JOB DUTIES

    35% - Leadership and Supervision
    • In collaboration with the Career Success Leadership Team, helps to establish long-range planning, design and implementation of Career Success.
    • Interprets and refines center's goals ensuring that the diverse students of UCSC are served and their career needs are met.
    • Has a solid understanding of the career services management system; suggests changes or improvements.
    • Conducts needs assessments to develop creative and innovative programming to meet the needs of the students, faculty, alumni, employers, and/or other stakeholders.
    • Helps to infuse career readiness into the UCSC culture.
    • Ensures that programs and events are managed effectively and that appropriate resources are available for implementation.
    • Trains, evaluates, supervises, and mentors career engagement staff. Coordinates professional training and development activities for staff to include such areas as skill building, diversity, equity and inclusion, labor trends, and personal/professional development.
    • Effectively manages and guides meetings through the use of agenda management strategies.

    35% - Career Engagement and Administration Evaluation
    • Creates and stewards the career engagement strategy. Develops and implements systems for assessing the quality and effectiveness of career engagement strategies and programs. Establishes programming goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely as well as defines effective student learning outcomes for programs and events. Creates procedures to collect and report data for quarterly and annual reports related to student activity and engagement. Makes recommendations based upon results to scale services and provides regular reports to staff.
    • Maintains budgets for programs and events. Demonstrates effective stewardship and use of fiscal resources. Oversees revenue generation from career engagement events and strategies.
    • Recommends and maintains electronic career development resources and web resources for job seekers. Utilizes, leverages, and troubleshoots Handshake, UCSC's online job, internship and employer database, to support and deliver services and resources to the university and students. Evaluates such services and resources and suggests use and extent of technological applications.
    • Collaborates on marketing and digital communication strategies to identify and attract students to departmental programs and events based on benchmarking studies.
    • Ensures smooth working relationships with academic divisions and campus departments to help promote services and programs, to identify and educate career advocates, and to scale services. Builds partnerships with alumni and industry in an effort to create a robust pipeline of career opportunities.

    25% - Student Engagement
    • Conducts career coaching for students through workshops and other experiences in ways that are engaging, culturally conscious, and effective.
    • Leverages industry and alumni insights and connections to provide experiences and career education to students.
    • Connects students to resources, industry, alumni, and experiential learning opportunities.
    • Delivers experiences, trainings, workshops and events for students on foundational and advanced career success topics.
    • Keeps abreast of current resources and use of career, occupational, and employment information in providing students with career coaching.
    • May serve as instructor of record for credit bearing courses tied to career development. May be involved in curriculum development and design for courses tied to career development.

    5% - Organizational Involvement
    • Participates in staff/professional development meetings and works collaboratively in task groups.
    • Chairs and serves on search committees.
    • Represent UCSC Career Success through active involvement and leadership in regional and national associations.
    • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
    • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience within education, workforce development, human resources, non-profit or related fields
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience supervising and managing professional staff
    • Knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
    • Knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice, and workshop and program design.
    • Ability to work with people from diverse cultures and collaborate with multiple and diverse constituents to accomplish goals.
    • Demonstrated verbal and written skills in communicating complex information to both internal and external audiences.
    • Ability to think critically and creatively, and imagine possibilities for solutions that do not currently exist or are not apparent.
    • Ability to effectively supervise, mentor, manage conflict, and guide staff to enhance performance.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of program management including program development, implementation, data collection, assessment and evaluation.
    • Skilled in establishing effective working relationships with staff of all levels, faculty, employers and alumni.
    • Experience and proficiency with incorporating the use of technology to deliver career services.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
    • Knowledge of labor market and employment trends, both locally and nationally, related to hiring students from a top-tier university.
    • Knowledge of UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
    • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
    • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
    • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
    • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
    • Ability to travel nationally.
    • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
