Description
A Category Manager is a professional responsible for managing a specific group or category of products within a company. They analyze industry and consumer trends, develop strategies, and oversee pricing, promotion, and product range management to maximize sales and profitability.
The Category Manager (“CM”) position, under the direction of the VP of Distribution, analyzes data and insights to identify industry and consumer trends, devises long-term strategies for product categories, develops exit strategies for unsuccessful products and fosters relationships with vendors. The CM will also determine product positioning, collaborate with marketing, assist S&OP role with forecasting product demand, conducts pricing change analysis, including historical changes and collaborate with Supply Chain team to manage vendor performance. You will develop overall category strategy and manage its execution on an enterprise level to optimize category activities. Based on analysis, (s)he will monitor, analyze, and adjust category strategies to drive category growth and financial performance at the overall organizational level.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Category Management and Product Development
- Leads and promotes a 6-Step Category Management Process to drive sales growth, deliver value, variety, and innovative solutions to the marketplace while maximizing efficiency and lowering operational costs.
Financial Forecasting, Management, and Accountability
- Create and maintain, in coordination with S&OP Manager, rolling monthly forecast, current performance, and anticipated trend analysis with market conditions both from a supply and demand context.
- Create and execute category plans to achieve the stated financial goals.
Team Building
- Contributes to a culture of an empowered team aligned at achieving stated goals through cross-functional and direct engagement.
- Provides opportunities for continuous development, product training and personal learning.
- Embraces change, leads efforts to role model change and help others understand the WHY.
Supplier Collaboration
- Assess customer needs and then align with suppliers that provide meet those needs.
- Enhance supplier relations through innovation, sales growth, and issue resolution.
- Identify gaps in portfolio and monitor market trends to identify product development opportunities. Ensure private brand products are primary consideration in the development and implementation of category strategy.
Customer Engagement
- Leads sales driven presentations and work with marketing to develop resources to support and enable profitable, sustainable sales growth.
- Create and deliver solutions to address customer needs through product, price, or process.
Product & Brand Development
- Develop concept to commercialization process, roadmap, and stage gates & milestones to achieve.
- Develop and execute private brand strategy on a good, better, and best basis.
- Identify new supplier sources, evaluate supplier capabilities/capacity, develop, and maintain artwork, etc..
Product & Pricing Management
- Creates a strategy and provides approval and guidance for setting market costs, cost changes, product evaluations and other product and pricing related activities.
- Manage and provide detailed analysis of assigned category performance. Analysis will focus on the areas such as product assortment, pricing (branch cost), promotions, price changes.
- Review the pricing in the category to identify issues and opportunities.
Additional tasks as required to achieve business results.

Qualifications
Skills and Education Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in marketing, Business or related field, preferred.
- 1-2 years of product marketing, category buying, procurement, merchandising or related experience required.
- Solid knowledge of category management, marketing, and sales principles.
- Understanding of data analysis and forecasting methods.
- Advanced skill with MS Office Suite products including Excel and PowerPoint.
- Strong analytical skills required.
- Experience leveraging internal and external resources appropriately.
- Ability to anticipate customer needs while giving high priority to customer satisfaction and service.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with seeking to understand first listening skills.
- Willingness to voluntarily take the initiative to identify and address existing and potential obstacles, issues, and opportunities.
- The ability to support employees in their efforts to achieve job goals by providing resources, removing obstacles, and acting as a buffer.
