Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. To be a Charge Nurse typically requires 3 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     PeaceHealth is seeking a RN Charge Nurse - Medical for a Full Time, 0.90 FTE, Variable position. The general salary range for this job opening at PeaceHealth is $38.61 – $60.79. The actual hiring rate is dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to, the job/position responsibilities, location, terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement, education, training, work experience, seniority, work performance, etc.

    Job Summary

    The Charge Nurse is a frontline leader who works under the direction of the Manager/Director. The Charge Nurse assists the Manager/Director in coordinating unit activities which assure safe and clinically effective patient care. The Charge Nurse supports and directs staff members in providing compassionate care and services to patients and families from diverse ethnic and social groups. Independent decision-making is expected in the execution of routine duties.

    Essential Functions

    • Coordinate patient care by shift and department.
    • Supervision and assessment of clinical practice. Direct and delegate to other team members.
    • Coach for performance to achieve individual and organizational goals; including orientation, competencies and evaluations.
    • Develop the departmental team and collaborative relationships to achieve expected outcomes.
    • Serve as a clinical and resource expert for the department.
    • Articulate shift/team operational issues to management as appropriate.
    • Appropriate stewardship of resources.
    • Adapts decision-making style to the situation and level of authority for achieving an optimal outcome including using collaborative decision making and effective communication skills.
    • Identify and apply opportunities for clinical practice improvement and support them with staff.
    • Ensure professional effectiveness through education and professional development.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Nurse may be required to float between obstetrics and Regional Infusion Center as requested/required and maintain competencies for both units

    Qualifications

    Education

    • Accredited School of Nursing Required
    • Bachelor's Degree Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
    • Preferred: Specialty certification

    Experience

    • Minimum of 2 years Required: Acute care nursing experience
    • 3 years Preferred: Acute care nursing experience

    Credentials

    • Required : Registered Nurse in state of practice
    • Required Upon Hire: Basic Life Support
    • Required: ACLS within six months. 
    • Required: PALS within one year. 
    • Required: Telemetry required within 90 days of hire. 

    Skills

    • Demonstrated leadership skills. 
    • Facilitation skills. (Preferred)
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply age specific principles of growth and development and life stages to meet each patient’s needs.
    • Demonstrated ability to promote positive interpersonal relationships and patient/family centered work environment.

    • Able to support and interpret medical center’s philosophy, policies and procedures. 
    • Ability to balance information regarding patient needs, staff needs, and unit needs in decision making. 
    • Demonstrated interest in staff development. 
    • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills. 
    • Strong organizational skills. 
    • Proficient computer skills including MS Office applications. 

    Working Conditions

    Lifting

    • Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices (NIOSH).
    • Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment and perform precise procedures.
    • Push/Pull: Frequently up to 45 lbs. force (i.e., WOW, medical carts).
    • Perform hands on CPR at least 20 mins using 100-125 lbs. of force (National Assoc. of EMS Physicians and AHA) Frequency should be seldom or occasionally.
    • Ability to move around area with frequent sitting.
    • Bending/ stooping/ squatting/ reaching/ kneeling frequently.
    • Lifting (non-patient) up to 20 lbs. occasionally and 5 lbs. frequently.

    Environmental Conditions

    • Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
    • Must be able to complete tasks in a noisy environment.

    Mental/Visual

    • Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
    • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
