The Mechanical Design and Development Engineer provides support to Eastman's Advanced Interlayers Technology team in Springfield, Massachusetts. This team is responsible for applications research, development, and scale up of our high-performance interlayers used in the Architectural and Automotive markets.
Major Responsibilities:
Provide mechanical engineering expertise in support of Technology process and product development projects. Plan and execute mechanical design activities from pilot scale testing through commercialization.
Project team member for Technology development and capital projects
Responsible for liaison between projects and Process Development teams
Responsible for planning/executing mechanical engineering aspects of capital projects
Responsible for developing plans to design/scope/quote/build equipment and modification to equipment and current processes
Identify and implement new and breakthrough processing technologies
Identify and implement cost reduction, capacity, and process improvement projects such as:
Asset effectiveness management improvements
Process optimization
Statistical Process Control
Mechanical reliability, etc.
Manage Technology maintenance activities including preventative maintenance, shutdown activities, predictive maintenance, equipment calibrations, regulatory compliance, and safety.
Qualification Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 10 or more years of experience in an industrial setting. An advanced degree is preferred but not strictly required.
Candidate must be a self-starter, with demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team.
Practical knowledge in the design, development, and operation of polymer processing machinery is preferred. Experience with extrusion, mixing, sheet forming, embossing, web/roll handling, and process safety systems is also preferred.
Expertise with CAD/CAM software.
Experience with computer-controlled machining methods is preferred.
Demonstrated familiarity with process control systems - specifically Delta V is preferred.
Attention to detail and good written and verbal communication skills.
Strong work ethic and ability to organize/prioritize and execute assignments in a high activity environment.
Willingness to travel to the world-wide Advanced Interlayers manufacturing sites and work with outside vendors.
