Being a Chemical Engineer compiles and analyzes testing data. Presents research results used to estimate costs, establish performance standards, identify solutions, and facilitate processes. Additionally, Chemical Engineer maintains lab and plant safety procedures for chemical storage, handling, transport, and disposal. Complies with all safety and environmental regulations. Requires a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. Typically reports to a manager. The Chemical Engineer work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. The Diamond Technologies Research Group, Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest is seeking a skilled and motivated Project Engineer to contribute to our cutting-edge electrochemical research projects. As Project Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in design, fabrication, and characterization of electrodes for chemical sensing. You will also drive innovative solutions in heavy metal detection, neurochemical measurements, sensor sensitivity enhancement, and more.

    The Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest is located on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. The Center focuses on next-generation materials for a variety of markets, including, automotive, energy, environment, and health. The Center’s technology portfolio includes additive manufacturing, coatings, plasma sources, diamond materials, electrochemical sensors, laser applications, and water treatment.  

    Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest is seeking a highly motivated, reliable, and technically competent individual to join our team as a Project Engineer. In this role you will play an integral part within our diverse team of experts facilitating international business coordination between U.S. Industry, Fraunhofer USA and Fraunhofer transatlantic affiliates. You will be part of a unique process combining industry customer discovery with technology matchmaking of the world’s largest applied research and development portfolio.

    This is a salaried position offering benefits that include health and dental insurance, life insurance, paid vacation, and a pension plan. The business core working hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with an average working week of 40 hours. Project-dependent work hours may be shifted outside of the core working hours as needed.

     

    Responsibilities:

    • Have theoretical and practical knowledge of electrochemistry techniques such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
    • Work towards developing electrodes and electrode materials for various sensing applications
    • Summarize analyses, draw conclusions and report to others in the R&D group
    • Perform testing to ensure quality control of fabricated sensors
    • Be responsible for custom electrodes and electrode fabricating and testing
    • Collaborate well with team members and teams in the company to work out solutions
    • Uphold lab upkeep and maintenance standards to ensure a safe and efficient research environment

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related field or equivalent experience
    • Experience in materials chemistry and electrochemistry
    • Proficiency in chemical handling and safe lab practices
    • Understanding of the product development and experimental science
    • Ability to multi-task and cross-train with various groups
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Prior experience working in a chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or similar laboratory setting
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Keen attention to detail and ability to carefully track and organize samples
    • The ability to collaborate effectively within the an interdisciplinary, diverse, and international team
    • The ability to adapt quickly to changing processes and responsibilities
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) for data processing and report formatting

    Preferred Qualifications (not required):

    • Experience with data processing and statistical software, such as Origin Pro, Matlab, Python, or R
    • Experience in various common analytical surface techniques such as UV/VIS, FTIR, RAMAN, XPS, SEM
