Summary
Under general supervision, monitors compliance with the UNM
Chemical Hygiene Plan, which includes activities such as inspecting chemical
use and storage areas, conducting chemical inventories, providing assistance
with minor chemical spill clean ups and coordinating the proper disposal of
waste chemicals.
Additional Duties and
Responsibilities:
*Participates in the implementation of applicable sections of the UNM Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) in departments and areas where chemicals are stored and/or used to ensure that chemicals are labeled, inventoried, handled, stored, and disposed of properly.
*Collaborates with UNM Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) department to provide advice and guidance on chemical safety protocols and procedures required to maintain compliance with local, state and federal agencies, such as the Los Alamos Community Service District, the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), and the occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
*Collaborates with EHS to ensure that Standard Operating Procedures are available for hazardous chemicals used in laboratories at UNM LA and ensures that all users of those chemicals have read and signed the applicable SOPs.
*Conducts routine and follow-up chemical safety inspections of labs and other areas where chemicals are used and stored.
*Inspects and activates all eyewashes, and safety showers at least monthly and tracks the dates of inspection by initialing an inspection tag on each unit.
*Ensures that each area where chemicals are used and stored has access to chemical spill kit.
Additional Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities Required
Knowledge of basic chemistry and familiarity with chemical hazards and chemical hazard controls.
Skill in performing chemical safety inspections.
Familiar with EPA, RCRA, and OSHA regulations associated with the use, storage, labeling, and disposal of chemicals.
