  • TITLE Chemist COMPANY JTEKT North America DEPARTMENT Materials Group LOCATION Greenville, SC CLASSIFICATION Exempt REPORTS TO Manager Materials GRADE 105     Summary/Purpose   This position will use chemical expertise to conduct material evaluations related to product quality, including manufacturing processes, product development and testing, and external customer complaints.  Technical knowledge of chemistry will be used to utilize and develop the analytical methods needed to evaluate or improve bearing manufacturing processes, solve technical problems affecting product quality, and support new product initiatives. Actual title will depend on experience.        Essential Duties and Accountabilities:   Utilizes lab instrumentation to help solve problems related to bearing material properties, steel cleanliness issues, lubrication and polymer issues Collect and analyze data to determine the material types and or the condition of samples under evaluation Develops and adds to manufacturing materials spectrographic databases Studies issues and recommends solutions for customer or supplier needs Perform instrumentation operator maintenance and operational viability checks as needed Uses specialty area knowledge to assist professional staff with problems and provide guidance Proposes process improvements as opportunities for greater efficiency or higher performance present in the lab and in the manufacturing centers Coordinates and consults with metallurgical and engineering staff as needed in situations such as failure analysis investigations needing a multi-discipline approach Maintains strong focus on laboratory safety and controls chemical wastes properly                 Supervisory Responsibilities: •    This position has no supervisory responsibilities.     Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Critical thinking skills and advanced data analysis. Proficient in advanced problem solving. Technical writing skills. Initiative in proposing project activities within assigned area of responsibility Demonstrated proficiency with chemical laboratory equipment Computer proficiency Good listener Ability to work on a team Education and Experience: ·       Bachelors or Master’s degree in Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering ·    2 years’ experience in industrial lab setting, contract laboratory or academic is ideal ·       Detailed knowledge of specialized chemical instrumentation including spectroscopic techniques such as ICP, IR, OES and related sample preparation techniques will be beneficial ·       Knowledge of ferrous and nonferrous alloy chemistry, lubricant and polymer chemistry and corrosion chemistry ·       Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  ·       Project management for large multi-discipline projects is beneficial     Work Environment/Physical Demands: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. •    Work is mostly performed in a laboratory setting with occasional exposure to health or safety hazards, and with substantial time spent working on a host of computers.  Proper use of appropriate personal protection equipment is mandatory as the situation dictates.  Requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to prepare samples and interface with the controls of analytical equipment and other office equipment. •    The performance of this position may occasionally require exposure to manufacturing areas which require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields and mandatory hearing protection. •    Travel by automobile and plane required approximately 10-20% of time.
