Chief Medical Officer directs the staff and develops policies for the organization's clinical programs. Works closely with hospital staff, department directors, and physicians to ensure that the highest standards of quality and service are maintained. Being a Chief Medical Officer oversees the implementation of quality improvement efforts designed to improve clinical performance and maintain compliance with HIPAA and other regulations and standards. Evaluates developments and innovations in medical care and makes recommendations for new practices and procedures. Additionally, Chief Medical Officer advises CEO and medical teams on matters impacting patient care. Requires a MD. Requires State License to Practice Medicine. Typically reports to top management. The Chief Medical Officer manages a business unit, division, or corporate function with major organizational impact. Establishes overall direction and strategic initiatives for the given major function or line of business.     Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, based in coastal Wilmington, NC, is an award-winning, mission-driven nonprofit community-based hospice and palliative care provider with an outstanding 40 plus year history of caring for individuals and families in southeastern North Carolina, and northeastern South Carolina. The agency provides superior full spectrum care to over 1,000 patients a day in private residencies, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, and our own three inpatient hospice care centers.  We also offer programs specializing in grief care, community education and outreach, memory care and support, veteran care, and more.

    What you’ll do as the Chief Medical Officer:

    • Member of the executive leadership team with the opportunity to impact strategic vision and overall direction for clinical practices and patient care.
    • Collaborate with CEO and board of directors in development of services and program plans.
    • Oversees the hospice and palliative care provider teams, comprised of 7 hospice /palliative care board certified physicians, and over 20 advance practice providers, all employed by the agency.
    • Functions as the senior medical liaison within the medical community and community-at-large, building effective relationships with referring physicians and healthcare systems.
    • Provides clinical expertise at medical staff rounds or meetings with affiliated facilities.

    What we’re looking for:

    • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
    • Hospice and Palliative Care Board Certification or eligible to be certified within 2 years.
    • Ten years of medical experience in an active clinical practice including 3 years of hospice or palliative care.
    • Three years progressive management and leadership experience in healthcare that includes managing medical providers and contributing to an organization’s strategies and goals preferred.
