    Dream Defenders, a National Black Freedom Organization, is seeking a dedicated Chief of Staff to join our team. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Chief of Staff will play a pivotal role in ensuring organizational efficiency, strategic alignment, and effective communication. This position requires a dynamic leader with a passion for social justice and proven experience in organizational management. The Chief of Staff is responsible for the development of Dream Defenders and its subsidiaries, financial management strategy and contributing to the development of the organization’s strategic goals. He/she/they acts as the liaison between top management and employees and/or other stakeholders and provides oversight and guidance to programmatic projects of high importance.

    Supervision

    The Chief of Staff reports to the Executive Director and will lead a team of staff

    Location

    Remote with travel required about a week out of every month. East Coast preferable; other locations considered within U.S. for exceptional candidates

    Responsibilities

    • Support and Direct our People & Culture team, Finance and Operations, Development and Data Management teams to ensure they are operating and growing as needed to meet organizational goals, values and practices.
    • Ensure all Admin departments are in total legal compliance with employment law, benefits, taxes, public funding, etc.
    • Ensure all staff engagement and political activity remain legally compliant with non-profit regulations
    • Mentor, develop, and coach staff
    • Oversee and manage key organizational projects, ensuring timely and successful execution.
    • Collaborate with various departments to streamline workflows and enhance project efficiency. Manage key projects, ensuring they align with organizational goals and timelines.
    • Assist in coordinating communications and activities with the Board of Directors, preparing materials for board meetings, and supporting governance processes.
    • Serve as the primary liaison between the Executive Director and the Board of Directors.
    • Coordinate communication, schedule meetings, and ensure effective information flow between the Board and executive leadership.
    • Lead the preparation and coordination efforts for meetings with funders.
    • Work closely with the CEO and other team members to compile relevant data and information for presentations to potential and existing funders.
    • Oversee day-to-day operations to ensure organizational efficiency, working closely with department heads to facilitate coordination and collaboration.
    • Act as a bridge between the Executive Director and staff, facilitating clear and effective communication within the organization.
    • Provide direct support to the Executive Director, including calendar management, travel arrangements, and preparation of briefing materials
    • Represent the Organization internally and externally
    • Work with HR to support staff development initiatives, fostering a positive and inclusive organizational culture.
    • Set objectives, priorities, and goals for Admin team
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization, ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and adherence to policies and procedures.
    • Work closely with the finance team to develop and manage the organization's budget, monitor financial performance, and make recommendations for improvement.
    • Analyze and oversee the Organization’s annual budget, monitoring goals and expenses with the team regularly
    • Make decisions for the Organization based on reporting and recommendations from the Finance and Development teams
    • Direct Development team on goals and benchmarks to achieve for fundraising; advise ED and ELT on financial planning and budgeting.

    Skills & Qualifications

    • Individual must share a commitment to the organization's mission
    • 4-year degree from an accredited college/university or at least two (2) years of work experience in human resources
    • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft and/or Google Suite; other miscellaneous databases as required.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
    • Self-motivated, ability to take initiative and ability to manage multiple projects independently and/or with limited supervision.
    • Extensive knowledge of standard office practices, procedures and equipment.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare effective correspondence with regards to routine matters.
    • Maintain the utmost level of confidentiality.
    • Ability to work independently, yet collaboratively, according to goals of the organization.
    • Must be detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines.
    • Ability to manage workflow of multiple critical issues within a continuously changing and adapting schedule for the organization.
    • Ability to interact with and understand persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.

    Salary and Benefits: The salary for this position will be in the range of $80,000-$95,000, with an extremely competitive benefits package and generous personnel policies.
