The Claims Investigator examines, and authorizes insurance claims investigated by insurance adjusters. Reviews, evaluates and processes insurance claims and makes recommendations for resolution. Being a Claims Investigator has contact with agents, claimants, and policy holders. Studies reports prepared by adjusters and similar claims to determine the extent of insurance coverage and validity of the claim. In addition, Claims Investigator determines settlement according to organization practices and procedures. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.   • JOB SUMMARY

    This position is located in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Office of Service Integrity. The mission of the DMV is to promote the safe operation of motor vehicles and public safety, while providing outstanding customer service.

    The position functions as Investigator at the senior level, responsible for cases of a complex and sensitive nature, often involving conflicting evidence that requires advanced investigative skills, and the ability to independently make a valid and corroborative decision. The Investigator is expected to conduct thorough investigation using ingenuity, independence, and the ability to adapt the investigative plan to meet unanticipated development.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Conducts complex investigations involving multiple allegations and covering a diverse range of subjects and allegations in such areas as DMV operations, logistics, personnel, finance, and ranging from complex inquiries to complicated issues that may result in further investigative matters that grow from the original complaint. Conducts extensive interviews to obtain factual statements and leads to other evidence. Assists federal and local law enforcement agencies in the preparation of case presentation to the grand juries. Assist the District of Columbia's Office of the AttorneyGeneral the preparation of eases for criminal, civil and/or administrative action.

    Collaborates with staff to prevent the introduction or reintroduction of stolen motor vehicles into interstate commerce, protect states, individuals, and commercial consumers from fraud and reduce the use of stolen vehicles for illicit purposes. Coordinates with staff to reduce fraudulent activity by dealerships participating in ODIS. Stays up to date with current events related to fraud and fraud detection, and issues security alerts or provides education when relevant information is available.Testifies in court on behalf of DMV for internal and external investigations.


    QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

    Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, the incumbent must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.

    WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT

    The work is sedentary in nature, however; there may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light objects required.

    The work is performed primarily in a training room or office settings that is heated/cooled, lighted, ventilated, and involves everyday risks or discomfort.
