The Claims Investigator examines, and authorizes insurance claims investigated by insurance adjusters. Reviews, evaluates and processes insurance claims and makes recommendations for resolution. Being a Claims Investigator has contact with agents, claimants, and policy holders. Studies reports prepared by adjusters and similar claims to determine the extent of insurance coverage and validity of the claim. In addition, Claims Investigator determines settlement according to organization practices and procedures. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Being a Claims Investigator works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. Work is closely managed.     What you will be doing:
    The incumbent will use investigative techniques and knowledge of applicable substantive law to plan and conduct investigations into the most difficult and complex allegations of fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, undue influence, consumer protection violations and conversion. In such cases, evidence may be difficult to obtain and care must be taken to ensure admissibility in court proceedings.

    Our organization, mission, and culture:
    The mission of Office of Public Advocacy (OPA)/Office of Elder Fraud and Assistance (OEFA) is to investigate complaints involving fraud against older Alaskans who are not otherwise able to bring a complaint without assistance and to provide assistance to older Alaskans who are victims of fraud. OEFA works with local, state, and national law enforcement and social services agencies and is tasked with bringing civil enforcement actions for relief for fraud committed against older Alaskans.

    • Law: Knowledge of State and Federal laws, including legal and court procedures, regulations, guidelines, precedents, admissibility of evidence, case preparation and/or settlements for applicable areas of law practiced or supported.

    Any combination of preparatory post-secondary education and/or progressively responsible investigative work experience performing duties such as locating and gathering information, evidence and/or testimony to be used in civil or criminal proceedings, administrative actions, or governmentally regulated activities which included preparing reports in support of attorneys or agencies engaged in administrative adjudication, and/or detecting and verify suspected fraud, licensing violations, and other violations of state law.
     
     Definitions:
     
    “Competencies” means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation.
     
    “Typically gained by” means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.
     
    “Training” and “education” in this guidance are synonyms for the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through
    formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs.
     
    “Progressively responsible” means indicating growth and/or advancement in complexity, difficulty, or level of responsibility.

    Some positions in this class may require eligibility for commission as a Special Officer with the State of Alaska as a condition of hire.
