    The Library

    The Hartnell College Library serves the information needs of the college community at all sites. The main campus library building houses traditional college library resources and services, including Circulation Services, Computer and Media Services, Reference Services, Technical Services, and an information competency classroom. The library's online services include a chat reference service, ebooks and article databases, information competency classes, and research guides.

    The Position

    Under the general direction of the area dean or appropriate administrator, the selected candidate will perform a variety of professional librarian duties as the Metadata and Collection Development Librarian and will fulfill the responsibilities of a full-time faculty member. This position is expected to work primarily in-person at Hartnell College's main campus in Salinas, with occasional travel to other district locations.

    • Performing original and copy cataloging and resolving complex cataloging problems in a consortial environment;
    • Establishing equity-based procedures regarding controlled vocabularies;
    • Providing direction and oversite in the operation of the technical services department (acquisitions and budget, cataloging, processing, and serials functions);
    • Developing and monitoring collection development budget;
    • Coordinating collection development of print and electronic materials across the entire collection in accordance with DEIA principles;
    • Oversees Special Collections and working to increase access to archival materials through digitization or other means;
    • Assisting in regularly scheduled reference, instruction, and information services, including some evening and weekend hours;
    • Instructing and guiding patrons in the use of library materials in-person and remotely
    • Participating in planning and management of the library, including budgetary and personnel decisions and assessing library services and instruction;
    • Preparing written reports and statistics;
    • Participates in the planning and management of the library in collaboration with other librarians, including assessment of library services
    • Teaching library / information competency courses;
    • Participating in department, division, and college planning and shared governance through committee and / or other institutional service;
    • Working outside of the academic year to prepare library services
    • Assignment also may include public services, grant writing, and other related duties

    The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a depth of knowledge in the field of library science. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities :

  • Two years of recent professional technical services experience, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Experience with the Alma library management system, including cataloging and acquisitions.
  • Knowledge and experience in cataloging a wide variety of formats using national bibliographic standards and formats.
  • Experience and knowledge in the selection and maintenance of library materials and in developing an equity-focused collection.
  • Experience in collection development, procurement, budget, and fiscal control.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends and developments in library technical services, digital library initiatives, digital preservation, and community college libraries, including projects to support DEIA initiatives.
  • Experience with a library's role in higher education to promote equity, achieve information literacy, and support career development.
  • Experience with resource sharing with other libraries : public, academic, and private.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in service.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and collegial working relationships with colleagues, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience in teaching information competency courses, orientations, and providing reference services to a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated project management skills in library operations, including deselection and redesign projects.

    Education and Experience :

    Master's degree in library science, or library and information science OR the equivalent.

  • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT;
  • Full-time, tenure track Librarian faculty position. The starting faculty salary range is $74,643.00 to $157,676.00 annually based on 185 days per academic year. The successful candidate's starting salary will be based on verified education and teaching experience.

    The district provides health benefits, which currently consist of full coverage for medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and a high percentage of coverage for eligible dependents. The employee assistance program provides basic life insurance for employees only. STRS (state teacher retirement system).

    A select group of candidates will be invited to participate in the first round of interviews, which will take place on the Hartnell College campus in Salinas, CA. The first round will involve a panel interview with faculty, staff, and the Dean. During this round, candidates will be asked to deliver a teaching demonstration on a topic that will be provided upon receipt of the interview invitation. Additionally, candidates will respond to a series of scripted questions. These questions will be made available for review 30 minutes before the interview. We anticipate conducting the first-round interviews during the first three weeks of April 2025.

    Candidates selected for the second round of interviews will meet with the college president and vice president. This round may also include a 50-minute teaching demonstration delivered to a group of Hartnell College students. The second-round interviews are expected to occur in the last week of April or early May.

    The final decision regarding the outcome of the interview process will be made in mid-May. Start Date : Fall 2025
