The successful candidate for our Managing Editor position will have a strong passion for producing books that maintain high editorial and production standards. 3-5 years of publishing experience are required, preferably in the book industry. The University of Pittsburgh Press is a publisher with distinguished lists in a wide range of scholarly and cultural fields. We publish books for general readers, scholars, and students. In our efforts to acquire the best available scholarship, the Press has focused on select academic areas: Latin American studies, Russian and East European studies, Central Asian studies, composition and literacy studies, environmental studies, urban studies, the history of architecture and the built environment, and the history and philosophy of science, technology, and medicine. Our books about Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania include history, art, architecture, photography, biography, fiction, and guidebooks.
Manages all editorial functions at the press. Establishes schedules and processes to maximize efficient internal and external editorial workflows. Monitors and reports on manuscript editorial budget.
The Managing Editor (ME) is responsible for the supervision and timely execution of all editorial functions at the Press. Assigns, supervises, and ensures the quality of the work of a large pool of freelance copyeditors. The ME appropriately schedules editorial functions with other publishing functions in mind and coordinates this scheduling with the Editorial and Production Director (EPD). Is responsible for monitoring and reporting on the manuscript editorial budget. Analyzes all manuscripts to identify problem areas and advise acquiring editors and authors. The ME's role in establishing and improving editing standards, policies, and procedures is of vital importance to the overall publishing success of the Press.
