POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for answering 911 calls and dispatching emergency personnel. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Communications Officer II”.
MAJOR DUTIES:
· Receives, monitors, and dispatches radio communications traffic for EMS, Fire, and Sheriff’s departments throughout the county, including all 911 calls.
· Dispatches the appropriate emergency personnel to incident locations; maintains radio contact with emergency personnel in the field; provides emergency medical instructions to callers prior to the arrival of emergency personnel as appropriate.
· Monitors weather conditions; makes appropriate notifications.
· Dispatches wrecker service to accident scenes.
· Enters and retrieves data from the National Crime Information Center network; runs driver’s license and license plate requests for officers in the field; verifies identity of wanted persons.
· Verifies addresses.
· Runs criminal background checks.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
· Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local statues and department policies and procedures.
· Knowledge of the regulations and procedures of state and national crime information centers.
· Knowledge of the geography and road system of Jasper County.
· Knowledge of the radio codes used in public safety work.
· Knowledge of standard operating procedures of customer agencies.
· Knowledge of dispatching procedures.
· Skill in reading maps.
· Skill in operating radio and communications equipment.
· Skill in operating a computer.
· Skill in dealing with the public.
· Skill in problem solving and decision making.
· Skill in oral and written communication.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
· Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar positon for one to two years.
· Possession of or ability to readily obtain SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) NCIC certification, South Carolina Criminal Justice Basic E-911, CPR, and First Aid.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or console, standing, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light objects, uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work is typically performed in a dispatch center that is often noisy and has dimly lit lighting.
