This is a highly skilled, technical position that routinely coordinates, inspects, maintains, and repairs backflow prevention systems and cross connection controls. This position involves inspecting grease traps at restaurants, hotels, bars and fast-food businesses within the City. Documenting inspections, performing follow-up inspections and entering reports regarding Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) and Industrial Pre-Treatment issues. Work includes ensuring compliance with Florida Department of Environmental Protection regulations. Work is performed under general supervision of the Meter Operations Supervisor.
- Conducts on-site inspections of construction, installation, alteration, and repair of backflow prevention systems to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, laws, ordinances, and codes.
- Investigates customer complaints regarding backflow prevention and water meter discrepancies.
- Advises and consults with contractors and residents regarding scheduling, approved design, methods and means, and materials.
- Reviews blueprints and specifications for proposed activities; verifies contractors are licensed and in possession of necessary permits.
- Performs a wide variety of customer service functions relative to assigned area of responsibility; may coordinate and conduct public meetings for the purpose of educating the public. Interacts and communicates with various groups, individuals, store managers, and members of the general public.
- Helps organize and attends community events.
- Consults and works with other governmental agencies as required.
- Maintains recordkeeping system and reports pertaining to inspections and code enforcement work.
- Coordinates with customers and contractors on backflow repairs and installations.
- Tests, repairs, and performs record keeping of all the City of North Port government building's backflows.
- Resolve customer services issues such as high-water usage.
- Performs inspections and re-inspections of food service establishments; ensures grease traps and interceptors, paperwork, files, etc. are properly maintained on site.
- Performs monthly business inspections.
- Utilizes electronic devices to update Lucity CMMS work orders for data collection.
- Works with the Asset Manager to establish a preventative maintenance schedule.
- Participates in the development and maintenance of the ISO Certification Policy.
- Ensures all food service establishments follow appropriate best management practices (BMPs) in accordance with the City’s FOG ordinance.
- Inspects and regulates entities operating in the city of North Port including food service facilities, food trucks, car washes, schools, automotive garages and laundromats.
- Administers and enforces the Industrial Pretreatment Program.
- Locates new businesses and helps orientate the owners to FOG program requirements.
- Performs inspections of oil and water separators including grease removal devices.
- Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment, tools, and software.
- Maintain, repair and test all hydrant and construction meters. Responsible for issuance, receiving and compliance. Identify any discrepancies.
- Works on all appurtenances.
- Performs general housekeeping duties as required.
- Works closely with the Compliance Coordinator and Staff Assistants to assure program directives are met.
- Establish and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for backflow compliance and FOG program.
- Oversee and maintain the City’s Cross Connection and Backflow Prevention Program.
- Oversee and maintain the City’s FOG Program.
- All other job duties as assigned.

Position requires the operation of a City vehicle.

Licenses and Certifications:
· Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license by date of hire.
· Must have or ability to obtain and maintain a Class B CDL w/ a tanker endorsement.
· Must have a Water Distribution License Class III and/or Wastewater Collection certificate at date of hire.
· Dual certification may be required, at request of the City.
· Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain Backflow Prevention Assemblies Tester and Backflow Repair Specialist certification within six (6) months of hire.
· Ability to obtain a Florida Water Distribution Level III license within one (1) year of hire date (if applicant currently only possesses a Wastewater Collection Certificate).
· Must have or ability to obtain Fats, Oils and Grease Management Level I certification within two (2) years of hire date.
Must have or ability to obtain Class C Industrial Pretreatment Program Inspector certification within two (2) years of hire.
