Assistant/Associate Director of Annual Giving

  • The Assistant/Associate Director of Annual Giving serves as an essential member of the Annual Giving team responsible for raising unrestricted and semi-restricted current gifts from a variety of constituents. This position leads the project management of Luther’s giving days, provides data-informed strategy and analysis for Luther’s overall annual giving plan, and collaborates on student engagement with the Alumni and Engagement team.
     
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Provide project management leadership over Luther’s giving days (currently Giving Day and One Team Day), which includes equipping and activating key stakeholders, managing a project timeline and budget, articulating and realizing successful outcomes, and analyzing data to improve effectiveness and efficiency year over year.
    • Contribute to the successful implementation of the Annual Giving team’s overall annual giving strategy, with particular focus on:
      • Managing solicitation lists and data requests
      • Developing segmentation strategies and ask matrices for broad audience appeals, with an emphasis on donor retention based on past performance
      • Crafting broad-based and segmented appeals in both digital and print form, as needed, in collaboration with the Annual Giving team
      • Track and assess the performance of each appeal with regard to retention, revenue, ROI, and other meaningful metrics.
    • Coordinate implementation of student engagement strategies, in collaboration with other members of the Annual Giving & Engagement teams, that cultivate an understanding of philanthropy and develop a young alumni donor base.
      • Over time, this may include recruiting and training student workers in the use of Slate (Luther’s development database) for engagement campaigns to targeted audiences (such as Phonathon or broad texting campaigns).
    • Complete electronic call reports on a weekly basis, and maintain and update database systems, Luther files, and data generated from new contacts.
    • Participate in department and College events (i.e. Homecoming, Christmas at Luther, Reunions, etc.) attend training and professional development programs as offered.
    • Contribute to the overall success of the alumni and development office and Luther College broadly through collaboration and cooperative relationships.
    • Maintain cooperative relationships between the Development office and other campus departments and programs. Contribute to a positive and pleasant work environment.
    • Promote a professional and positive image of the College in the community and among its constituents and serve as an advocate for the College and its mission.
    • Promote, uphold, and exemplify the College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • Adhere to the AFP Code of Ethical Standards and the Donor Bill of Rights.
    • Assist the Director of Annual Giving in other duties as they may arise.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS:
     
    Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree minimum; Degree from a liberal-arts college desired.
    Experience:
    • 1-3 years of experience in annual giving, development, advancement services, project management, or related fields.
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices associated with fundraising in higher education including direct mail, online giving, telemarketing, and personal solicitation.
    • Ability to manage and promote complex events and projects.
    • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Self-starter demonstrating initiative, creativity, and ability to get results.
    • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
    • Exudes enthusiasm, confidence, flexibility, and integrity.
    • Ability to develop rapport quickly and communicate effectively with a wide variety of personalities.
    • Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances.
    • Ability to understand the needs and interests of donors in order to develop relationships between them and the College.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality with a variety of prospects, donors, and leadership volunteers.
    • Ability to clearly represent the mission and vision of Luther College as a residential, Lutheran, liberal arts college.
    • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends of the college.
    • Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT:
     
    • Physical demands and environmental conditions: Work performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment. Involves sitting for a long period of time, standing, and walking in a well-lit and well-ventilated office.
    • This position may be required to work evenings and/ or weekends as necessary to support Alumni/ Development events and programming.
