    Position Summary

    The bailiff acts as the liaison between the jury administrator, litigants, jurors, attorneys, the public, and the superior court judges. The judge determines the specific duties and how they will be carried out.

    Bailiffs are expected to be knowledgeable, respectful, efficient and helpful in managing the judicial process. They will be professional and courteous. They are expected to dress and speak in a business-like and professional manner. They must have the ability to exercise tact and discretion when warranted. Bailiffs will also be respectful of cultural, ethnic, and racial differences that may occur with members of the public, court room attendees, and jury members.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    The following examples of duties and accountabilities illustrate the general range of tasks assigned to the position but are not intended to define the limits of required duties. Other essential duties may be assigned consistent with the general scope of the position.

    • Greet, sign-in, and orient potential jurors upon their arrival for jury service.
    • Prepare the jury deliberation room for jurors.
    • Escort jurors from the assembly room to the courtroom at the beginning of trial and at breaks.
    • Be present during the selection of jurors and assist this process as directed by the judge.
    • During recesses, the bailiff will monitor the foyer and corridors to prevent contact by jurors with counsel, litigants, witnesses, and spectators.
    • Once the jury has been selected, the bailiff is responsible for instructing the jury of their duties, conduct and responsibilities while impaneled on a case under the guidelines of the court.
    • The bailiff delivers the evidence into the jury room before deliberations begin.
    • The bailiff is the sole contact with the jurors outside of the courtroom and will instruct the jurors to the procedures they must follow throughout the trial.

    Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

    Work is performed in a standard court room/office environment; subject to sitting for extended periods of time, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects up to 50 lbs.
