  • This is investigative work of felony or misdemeanor cases occurring in Douglas County in an effort to prosecute guilty parties of the crime.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Interviewing victims, witnesses, defendants, and law enforcement officers to gather information and facts on assigned criminal cases.
    • Reviewing criminal histories, driver license records and other confidential records generated from the GCIC system.
    • Obtaining medical records, school records, driving records, and other physical evidence.
    • Testifying in trial proceedings.
    • Conducting case review work by analyzing law enforcement documents such as investigative reports, incident reports, search warrants, property, and evidence receipts.
    • Assisting in photo-review of suspects by victims and witnesses.
    • Consulting with State Crime Lab personnel to evaluate test findings and results.
    • Conducting undercover surveillance and other investigative work.
    • Preparing reports and summary case work for prosecution with the District Attorney’s Office.
    • Conducting special and internal investigations at the direction of the Sheriff or his designee.
    • Operating a county vehicle in conducting county-related business.
    • Other duties may be assigned.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
    • A minimum of one year work experience in Patrol.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

    Must meet all eligibility requirements established by the Sheriff’s Department for promotion to this classification.

    • Must be a citizen of the United States or legally qualified to work in the United States.
    • Must have no record of any felony conviction.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

    • Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR).
    • Basic certification as a Georgia Peace Officer.
    • Successful completion of a minimum of 40 hours POST-approved in-service training each year.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of general law enforcement practices; federal, state, and local criminal, traffic, and juvenile laws and legal procedures; and the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the County.
    • Knowledge of or the ability to learn the geography of the county and the location of important buildings and areas.
    • Knowledge of law enforcement and criminal investigation procedures, practices and operations.
    • Knowledge of legal terminology and the criminal code of Georgia.
    • Skill in the operation and maintenance of assigned patrol vehicle and equipment.
    • Skill in the use of firearms, restraining devices, baton, intoximeter and other agency issued equipment.
    • Skill in investigative procedures.
    • Skill in public relations.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to develop clear and comprehensive reports and to obtain information through oral interviews and interrogations.
    • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, agency correspondence, policies and procedures, and evidentiary documents; to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions.
    • Ability to respond to a variety of complex interpersonal matters and to take appropriate action based on facts and circumstances of the situation.
    • Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions; exercise independent judgment; mentally recall conversations, observations, and impressions; and to make accurate descriptive observations of objects, events, and human behaviors in terms of physical characteristics.
    • Ability to deal professionally and fairly in interactions with the general public; to effectively communicate with the public; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other county departments and employees as well as with county officials.
    • Ability to qualify semi-annually with firearms.
    • Ability to work routinely under highly stressful conditions including life threatening situations.
    • Ability to learn law enforcement methods, procedures, and techniques and to apply such knowledge to specific situations.
    • Ability to prepare legal documents such as affidavits and subpoenas.
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret a variety of documents such as technical reports, governmental policies and procedures, correspondence, budgets, tables, professional articles, etc.
    • Ability to collect data, information and trends.
    • Ability to establish facts and draw conclusions.
    • Ability to write reports, policies, operating procedures and correspondence.
    • Ability to use a personal computer.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with employees and managers at all levels of the origination.
    • Ability to interview and interrogate.
    • Ability to use and operate cameras and video equipment.

    Employment is contingent upon passing a mandatory Background Investigation, MVR, Medical Exam, and Drug Screening.

    Salary: $64,496.36 - $78,582.50 annually, ($29.5313 - $35.9810 hourly), plus full benefits package
