    Job Overview:

    Space Coast Crew is seeking a dedicated and experienced Director of Rowing/Head Coach for our high school rowing program, responsible for overseeing all aspects of the High School and Middle School team. The Director of Rowing will drive athlete development, design and implement training plans, and promote a positive, inclusive team culture that emphasizes growth, discipline, and sportsmanship both on and off the water. This role requires a deep passion for rowing, strong leadership abilities, recordkeeping abilities, effective communication skills, the capacity to work with student-athletes of varying skill levels to ensure every athlete reaches their fullest potential.

    Key Responsibilities1. Coaching & Training

    • Training Program Development: Lead all coaches to create tailored training plans for each of their respective rowing classifications. Conduct daily practices - this includes warm-ups, technical drills, conditioning, and race pieces.
    • Skill and Technique Development: Provide detailed and individualized instruction in technique on the water, erging, lifting technique, while adapting to the abilities and learning styles of each athlete.
    • Race Preparation: Prepare athletes for regattas with race plans, practice sessions, and mental preparation techniques to build a competitive mindset. This should include proper nutrition plans, stretching routines, and sleep patterns.
    • Safety Protocols: Ensure all coaches adhere to safety guidelines for on-water activities, equipment handling, and emergency responses. The Director of Rowing is directly responsible for the conduct of all coaches within the team.

    2. Program Leadership and Development

    • Program Vision: Establish a long-term vision promoting growth, competitiveness, and individual development for each athlete within a supportive team environment.
    • Team Culture: Foster a positive, inclusive, and disciplined team culture based on respect, teamwork, accountability, and perseverance. Encourage rowers to practice these values on a daily basis.
    • Athlete Development: When faced with a unique athlete situation, design individualized training programs that cater to their skill and ability level, focusing on rowing technique, physical fitness, and mental resilience.

    3. Communication & Team Administration

    • Team Communication: Maintain frequent and transparent communication with athletes, assistant coaches, parents, and the board. Provide updates on team progress, schedules, and goals while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor.
    • Parent Relations: Build strong relationships with parents, offering clear information about program expectations, events, and the support needed for each athlete’s individualized development.
    • Administrative Duties: Manage the logistics of practice schedules, daily lineups, regatta registrations, regatta lineups, travel arrangements, and budgeting with cooperation from the Board of Directors.

    4. Regatta Planning & Management

    • Regatta Logistics: Coordinate all aspects of regatta function, including athlete travel, boat trailer transportation, food trailer transportation, lineup management, and race strategies.
    • Race Day Leadership: Ensure athletes are prepared and present on race day. Provide technical and motivational support before, during, and after races. Ensure athletes have all tools required to excel in their events.
    • Event Compliance: Handle administrative needs such as athlete registration, bow cards, and volunteer coordination.

    5. Equipment Management

    • Maintenance & Inventory: Oversee the maintenance of boats, oars, ergs, and other equipment. Work with the Boathouse Manager to ensure proper storage, and address repairs or replacements as needed.
    • Athlete Responsibility: Encourage athletes to take care of equipment, promoting respect and accountability for the team's resources.

    6. Athlete Welfare and Academic Support

    • Student-Athlete Support: Monitor the academic progress of athletes, providing mentorship and promoting a healthy balance between academics and athletics. Recognize academics must be prioritized over athletics, and cooperate with athletes and parents to ensure their athletic performances do not hinder their academics.
    • Injury Prevention: Implement injury prevention practices and coordinate with athletic trainers to support athlete well-being. Injuries of any shape or magnitude must be treated seriously.
    • Collaboration with Schools: Work with school administrators where possible to align the rowing program with academic goals and student support.

    7. Recruitment and Team Building

    • Recruitment Efforts: Engage with school administration to attract new students to the rowing program. Develop strategies to recruit both novice and experienced rowers.
    • Team Building: Organize team activities to foster camaraderie and encourage parental involvement to build a strong, supportive team community.

    8. Fundraising and Community Engagement

    • Fundraising: Help coordinate fundraising efforts for team expenses, equipment, travel, and other operational needs.
    • Community Outreach: Engage with the local rowing community and alumni. Organize camps, clinics, and volunteer opportunities to increase program visibility and promote the sport.

    Required Qualifications

    • Experience: Multiple years of experience coaching rowing at the competitive level. This may be at the National level in High School, or DII and above at the collegiate level.
    • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills; ability to motivate and develop student-athletes.
    • Safety Certifications: A Level II Rowing Coaching Certificate is mandatory. CPR and First Aid certifications are required. Growth opportunities will be made available to pursue a Level III Certification via funding from Space Coast Crew.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with athlete recruitment, team building, and program development.
    • Knowledge of equipment maintenance.
    • Prior competitive rowing experience.
