    Responsibilities

    1. Performs or assists in performing documentation in the patient chart, patient activities of daily living and basic nursing care procedures such as bathing, feeding, ambulation, specimen collection, vital sings, etc., as directed by the Registered Nurse.

     

    2.Provides for care, comfort, and safety of assigned patients under close direction of the registered nurse. Transports or accompanies patients within the hospital or to their vehicle on discharge, transfers patients from room to room or from chair to bed (and return), and positions patients.

     

    3. Answers call lights and responds to patient requests and/or relays to Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse responsible for patient’s care.

     

    4. Accepts medication deliveries and distributes to secure designated areas on the unit.

     

    5. Performs order entry functions by transcribing physician orders onto the Medication Administration Record, entering them in the computer, and/or scheduling diagnostic tests, therapies, physician appointments etc., with the appropriate departments or offices. Notifies nursing personnel of orders requiring immediate attention and assures that orders have been signed by the Registered Nurse.

     

    6. Performs basic monitoring functions with component central monitoring station including, but not limited to:

    1. admitting and discharging from the Central Monitor and assigning arrhythmia monitoring, if needed,
    2. adjusting alarm limits at the RN’s direction, validating alarms, changing paced status, and turning alarms on/off,
    3. printing strip recordings at intervals per routine orders, printing strip recordings of alarms, and assuring that any changes in conduction, rhythm, or rate requiring immediate attention are reviewed by an RN.
    4. Mounting routine and alarm records for review by nursing staff, and posting of reviewed strip sheets to the appropriate patient chart (CICU) or unit (PCU or telemetry) daily, troubleshooting monitor problems and contacting Bio Med for repairs as appropriate,
    5. pages appropriate floor to notify nursing staff of need for assessment of patient arrhythmia, no signal, low battery, etc.

     

    7. Utilizes the phone system, paging system, call light system, computer system, pneumatic tube system, photocopier, and fax machine to provide clerical support. Monitors performance of the listed systems and other unit resources and reports related needs for repairs or supplies to the Unit Director.

     

    8. Organizes medical charts for patients by assembling new charts on admission, adding appropriate pages to charts as necessary, disassembling charts and routing appropriately on transfer, death or discharge, and assures chart is accurate and complete. Prints forms for nursing or medical staff as directed.

     

    9. Cleans and maintains specialized equipment (e.g., tele boxes, monitor cables and modules) as directed by the Unit Manager or designee. Restocks CICU rooms and/or designated areas.


    Qualifications

    Licenses & Certifications:

    • Must be at least 16 years of age as required by state
    • Nurse Assistants must be on the Nebraska Nurse Aide Registry
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) from the American Heart Association upon hire

     

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to exchange factual information with patients, visitors, physicians and nursing personnel in a courteous manner, and to allay apprehensions of patients and visitors.
    • Ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail for up to 80% of work time when monitoring central station, entering and transcribing orders, answering the telephone, transcribing physicians’ orders, talking with        physicians and staff and when providing patient care.
    • Analytical skills necessary in order to prioritize clerical tasks, organize work, gather and interpret routine data regarding patient assessments, transports, and maintain routine records.
