Data Science Director establishes, plans, and administers the overall policies and goals of the data science function. Provides strategic guidance and overall direction for analytical efforts. Being a Data Science Director determines the appropriate tools, techniques, staffing and methodologies to extract data that produces meaningful results. Uses extensive knowledge and research into big data tools to guide the integration of new and existing tools into the organization's data science tech stack. Additionally, Data Science Director typically requires a master's degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Data Science Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.   • SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: The Senior Director of Data and Assessment is an essential leader in Portland Public Schools. The Senior Director leads our data strategy and ensures that our central office and schools are using all forms of data to monitor and improve outcomes across Portland Public Schools. The Senior Director works with a small data team which establishes, maintains and supports data systems and the use of data across the school system. The Senior Director will support members of the cabinet to review data at the District level. The Senior Director will also work directly with schools to review data and develop action plans in partnership with our network teams.

    ABOUT PORTLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS: This is an exciting time to join the Portland Public Schools in a critical leadership role. The District is the largest in the state of Maine serving over 6,600 students and an additional 2,000 students in adult education. The District has a diverse student population with approximately 50% of students identifying as Black, Indigenous and other People of Color, 30% identifying as multilingual learners, and 15% of students experiencing housing instability. Portland Public Schools is finalizing a five year strategic plan to ensure that all students graduate from its schools prepared and empowered. As a senior leader in the District, the Senior Director will have an essential role in achieving the goals of the strategic plan.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
    Management

    ? Manage the Data team consisting of three members
    ? Serve as a key thought partner for the superintendent and the District’s cabinet

    Assessments
    ? Coordinate internal and state assessments to monitor student achievement. Complete this in partnership with the networks’ Directors of Academics
    ? Support schools in implementing required assessments
    ? Ensure that the assessment data is integrated into the data platforms so that data can be easily accessed

    Data Infrastructure and Data Policy Management
    ? Develop, maintain, and improve data infrastructure over time including tools for data collection, ingestion, storage, visualization, and dissemination 
    ? Manage the data team to ensure that the Student Information Systems maintain key student data and various educational technology systems that integrate with our student information system
    ? Collaborate with our Technology team and vendors to ensure working connections between systems and to set up/maintain automatic and ad-hoc account provisioning
    ? Audit information, correct errors, and build skills in users necessary to prevent future errors
    ? Establish and document the policies, practices, protocols, and systems across schools and users to ensure consistent and accurate data practices

    Reporting
    ? Create data visualizations and regular reports that answer questions for key stakeholders to provide insight on student, school and regional performance
    ? Facilitate data analysis by network and school leaders and staff
    ? Coordinate with school teams and vendors to produce and distribute accurate report cards, data sheets, progress reports, and transcripts in a timely manner
    ? Complete all required state and federal reporting

    Strategic Goals and Measures
    ? Consults with the network, operations, and strategy and superintendent teams to create data-tracking tools & select metrics that are reliable proxies for mission progress (goals)
    ? Research & proposes annual targets for school-facing metrics. The resulting goals (metric target) are ultimately approved by the Site Leadership Team & Board
    ? Consult, research and/or propose key/leading performance indicators that can be used to monitor progress towards goals during the school year. This includes developing models that can be used to predict future performance/progress to goal

    Systems and Structures
    ? Partner with senior district leaders, network leaders, and school leaders to establish a clear cadence and set of systems for using data to review progress throughout the school year and the 5-year strategic plan

    Training and Support
    ? Train school leaders, assistant principals, operations leaders, and other school staff to efficiently use data tools
    ? Observe, interview, establish periodic meetings, and/or build relationships with key constituent groups (leaders, teachers, operations staff, parents, and students) to understand their experience, gather feedback and prioritize enhancements to systems function, reports, and training
    ? Prioritize and manage relevant support requests and communicate best practices and solutions to common challenges across school sites
    ? Develop reference tools and other resources to support ongoing training and professional development.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

    ? Master's degree in applicable field from an accredited college or university
    ? Maine principal certification preferred but not required
    ? Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization
    ? Technology, written and oral communication skills
    ? Additional combinations of applicable education, training, and experience are welcome.
