Dean of Business manages administrative functions of the college of business. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Business leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Business requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Business manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.     The Position:

    Thomas Edison State University seeks a full-time Associate Dean; a member of the leadership team of School of Business and Management. The School of Business and Management is the second largest school with a student population of approximately 1,800 students, offering more than 14-degree programs: Associate through Doctorate and certificates exclusively online. Many of the programs have national recognition for their academic quality and value. Several of the school’s degrees are accredited by Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and have partnerships with private and government organizations for developing and improving programs.

Applicants must demonstrate their ability to build academic communities, engage students, address the educational needs of diverse and complex constituencies, and collaborate with external organizations. The ability to engage in grant writing and external funding opportunities is highly desirable.

    Specific areas of work include the following:

    Under the direction of the Dean, the Associate Dean assists in the general administration of all academic and operational dimensions of the school.

    The Associate Dean is responsible for organizing, planning, and coordinating curriculum development and implementation, recruitment, retention, strategy development and implementation, research and development activities for the School of Business and Management. The Associate Dean works as a liaison across the University partnering with other Schools, programs, coordinators, and administrative offices to facilitate the goals and objectives of the school and University.

    • Under the direction of the Dean, guide and/or assist in the development of the school’s academic and professional asset portfolios in high demand, market-relevant degrees, certificates, and customized educational offerings.
    • Assist in ensuring academic quality, rigor, and application of all degree and certificate programming.
    • Ensure that educational programs meet appropriate academic, professional, and accreditation standards and oversee programmatic accreditation activities.
    • Proactively engage in student recruitment and retention strategies.

    School and Student Centric Leadership and Engagement

    • Assist in leading key academic program responsibilities; strategic planning, hiring, performance management, and enterprise-wide relationship building.
    • Collaboratively manage undergraduate and graduate program enrollment, retention, and graduation initiatives with the Assistant Dean of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies and Assistant Director of Operations in the School of Business and Management, as well as part of the academic affairs team.
    • Proactively contact students, applicants, and prospective students toward program enrollment
    • Create an academic community supporting diverse adult student populations.

    Community Engagement

    • Conceive, implement, and assist in leading innovative initiatives associated with developing and engage external business and management professional organizations, constituencies, and underdeveloped markets.
    • Collaborate with the Dean, Vice President of Community and Government Relations to develop relationships with government, for-profit, and non-profit organizations leaders. Construct partnerships and beneficial relationships, strengthening the University’s educational and service commitment.
    • Co-develop and lead school-specific school-based communities including curriculum committee, Dean’s Advisory Committee, Dean’s Market Liaison Committee.

    Funding Expansion

    • Work closely with the Dean and the Chief Advancement Officer on initiatives to advance the mission of the school, including identifying and obtaining external funding to expand the work of the School.
    • Assist to identify University aligned grant sources and develop grant proposals in a departmentally collaborative environment, collaborating closely with the Provost, Deans, and associated senior staff to expand grant acquisition strategies.

    Competencies:

    • Engage in school-based strategic planning, implementation, measurement, and recalibration, as aligned with institutional needs.
    • Expertise and experience in business and management and/or related work in industry and agencies.
    • Data-driven, market focused decision-making, planning and coordinating curriculum development approach, implementation, and review.
    • Experience with student recruitment, reclamation, and retention initiatives.
    • Experience with accreditation, especially programmatic accreditation (ACBSP) in business and management
    • Course development and instructional delivery experience in the online environment.

    Requirements:

    Education: Earned doctorate in business, management, or aligned academic discipline.

    Experience: A minimum of 6 years of experience as Associate dean, chair, and/or experienced faculty/administrator in a higher education developing and managing graduate and undergraduate market-relevant business, management, and/or related degree and certificate programs.

    • Experience recruiting, enrolling, and retaining undergraduate and graduate students; with focus on adult students.
    • Significant leadership experience in the business, management, or aligned industry can replace 3 years of faculty/administrator experience.
    • Effective working relationship skills with professional and support staff, and the community at large.
    • Collaborate and build relationships at a distance with students, mentors and other professionals.
    • Use technology to communicate, develop relationships, expand the school’s markets, and advance the school’s growth.
    • Demonstratable commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

    Preferred Experience and Skills:

    • Significant experience developing and leading online business, management or aligned scholar-practitioner degree programs.
    • Experience with programmatic accreditation; ACBSP, AACSB, or IACBE.
    • Instructional experience in distance learning
    • Experience integrating real world, practical, and professional experiences learning into academic programs.
    • Experience writing grants and administering sponsored programs.
    • Experience in developing and managing degree and certificates programs.
