    ROLE:

    The Dean of the School of Business and Economics (SOBE) represents the academic school within the University, the community, and external partnerships. The Dean is responsible for leading the SOBE's academic and co-curricular programs in achieving excellence in accordance with the philosophy and values of Lutheran Christian higher education. The Dean leads the SOBE faculty to establish degree and program requirements and to administer the curriculum of the school. The Dean is responsible for securing and managing fiscal resources and for recruiting, developing, and retaining faculty and staff who support and advance the school's mission and the University's strategic plan and mission.

    APPOINTMENT:

    • Appointed by the Senior Vice President/Provost.
    • Approved by the President.

    STAFF RELATIONSHIPS:

    • Reports to the Provost.
    • Supervises the Assistant Dean of the SOBE and all faculty and staff of the SOBE.
    • Serves as a member of Academic Council, Leadership Council, and other University committees as needed.
    • Collaborates with the Deans of other schools and the supervisors of Admissions, Advancement, Finance, Marketing, Strategic Communications, Registrar's Office, and other University offices as necessary.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the below duties satisfactorily:

    Section B: Administration

    1. Lead the development and implementation of the school's mission and strategic plan and ensure that each is congruent with the University's mission and strategic plan.
    2. Facilitate an environment that stimulates the intellectual, spiritual, ethical, and professional development of the school's faculty and the University's students.
    3. Supervise the administration of all programs within the school.
    4. Appoint an Assistant Dean and program directors annually as needed to effectively and efficiently operate the school's programs.
    5. Empower, encourage, and supervise the activity of faculty and staff, overseeing the evaluation of their performance annually based on the goals of the Individualized Development Plan and position descriptions.
    6. Ensure the accuracy, clarity, and usefulness of school information included in the academic catalog, web pages, and other print and digital material.
    7. Meet with experts and form advisory councils constituted by external members representing various business specialization and interests in order to gain input on professional needs, expectations, and trends that the school's academic programs can respond to and serve.
    8. Facilitate and manage relationships with external partnerships and professionals, particularly for securing internships, collaborations, donations, and service opportunities.
    9. Work with Admissions, Marketing, and any external partners to set, recruit for, and reach enrollment goals in innovative and effective ways.
    10. Provide oversight and support to the respective SOBE program directors for (re-)accreditation work (e.g., with IACBE), including budgetary allocations and University support for any site visits and self-study reports.
    11. Sign official forms as needed for conducting University business.
    12. Prepare all regular reports about the school for the Board of Regents.

    Section B: Curriculum

    1. Supervise and administer all programs of study offered by the school in compliance with relevant learning outcomes, regulatory bodies, and the missions of the school and University.
    2. Monitor academic program modality, marketability, and cost effectiveness, revising or decommissioning programs as needed through proper processes.
    3. Work with the Special Assistant to the President and other colleagues on developing, approving, and implementing new academic programs.
    4. Work with the Office of Innovative Instruction and eLearning on (re)developing online courses.
    5. Coordinate with the Deans of other schools as necessary on any shared curricula or faculty.

    Section C: Instruction

    1. Monitor teaching loads and make appropriate adjustments that foster academic excellence for students, build on the expertise of faculty , and maximize returns on financial investments.
    2. Maintain instructional standards and monitor faculty instructional activities, including adjuncts.
    3. Monitor student evaluation of academic courses and review individual results with faculty as appropriate.
    4. Hold faculty accountable to make appropriate changes in curriculum and/or instruction.
    5. Assist the Educational Effectiveness Committee with the supervision of assessing student achievement.
    6. Arrange for the resources students need to succeed academically if not already offered at the University.

    Section D: Faculty and Staffing

    1. Arrange for faculty and staff hiring, training, and supervision in the SOBE.
    2. Ensure all faculty and staff participate in Vision-Mission-Vocation (VMV).
    3. Encourage faculty to develop as instructors, scholars, and servants in line with their callings at Concordia.
    4. Inform faculty of the University policies on and their eligibility for advancement in rank and sabbaticals.
    5. Encourage staff to cultivate their knowledge, skills, and dispositions to fulfill their particular callings.

    Section E: Budget

    1. Prepare the annual budgets of the school for approval.
    2. Manage the approved operating budgets and any capital or restricted funds.
    3. Work with University Advancement to identify and secure donors for the school.

    Other duties may be assigned from time to time.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

    • Master's degree is required; earned doctoral degree preferred.
    • Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience at the college level or leadership experience in business.
    • Clear and compelling vision of excellence in Christian university education.
    • Demonstrated skill in communication, collaboration, and administration.
    • Support of Concordia University Irvine's doctrinal and mission statements.
