Dean of Mathematics manages administrative functions of the college of mathematics. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Mathematics leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Mathematics requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Mathematics manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Mathematics typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Southwest Virginia Community College (Southwest) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, Southwest offers associate’s degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. Southwest also has associate’s degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.

    Southwest Virginia Community College seeks a Mathematics Faculty member to begin August 16, 2024. The successful candidate will provide college-level instruction in a variety of Virginia Community College System mathematics and/or statistics courses via diverse modalities including face-to-face, hybrid, hyflex, and online course delivery.

    This position reports directly to the Dean of Arts and Sciences and indirectly to the Vice President of Academic and Student Services.

    The primary responsibility of a member of the teaching faculty in the Virginia Community College System is to provide quality instruction for the students. At Southwest, the major emphasis is on excellent teaching by working with students in classrooms and/or laboratories, through individual conferences, various distance education media, and related activities. Our goal is to help students develop their own interests and abilities to the fullest capacity to become better persons, better workers, and better citizens. Applicants should possess expertise in their field and a desire to work in a collaborative, learning-centered environment focused on equity, student learning, and success.
    Successful candidates will have an equity mindset in creating, reviewing, evaluating and revising course objectives, instructional materials, and course syllabi.

    This position is responsible for establishing a campus presence by holding regular office hours, advising students, participating in campus life, and participating in assigned committee work. Classes may be scheduled in the evening and/or off-campus.

    Special Assignments

    May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



    KSA's/Required Qualifications
    • Master’s in Mathematics from a regionally accredited institution
    • Knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies to facilitate student-centered learning;
    • Experience interacting successfully with academically diverse student populations;
    • Ability to teach classes using various instructional delivery methods including web-based instruction;
    • Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand;
    • Ongoing professional development and membership in an appropriate regional, state, and/or national organization related to teaching assignment;
    • Understanding and belief in the comprehensive mission of community colleges.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders important to the college.

    Additional Considerations
    • 18 graduate hours in statistics or physics or geology
    • One or more years successful experience teaching in mathematics or related field.
    • Doctorate in mathematics or a related field from an accredited college or university.
    • Community college teaching experience.
    • Experience with teaching in multiple formats (8-week, 12-week, 16-week, etc.).
    • Experience delivering courses via Canvas or diverse modalities.
    • Ability to educate across the various branches of mathematics; examples include Calculus (I, II, and II), Linear Algebra, Algebra, Statistics, Differential Equations, Pre-calculus, or Applied Mathematics
