The DEPUTY CONTROLLER contributes to the development and maintenance of financial reporting, planning and budgeting systems. Assists the corporate controller in directing the organization's accounting functions including cost, payables, and reporting. Being a DEPUTY CONTROLLER ensures that all corporate and required accounting policies and procedures are documented and followed by the organization. Oversees the preparation of periodic reporting and required legal filings. In addition, DEPUTY CONTROLLER may train accounting staff. May coordinate with auditors. Requires a bachelor's degree of accounting or finance. Typically reports to the controller. The DEPUTY CONTROLLER typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget.     This position is a full remote role, the right candidate must live in the Eastern Time Zone


    As the Controller, you will report directly to the Director of Finance and lead all day-to-day finance operations including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, payroll and grant/contract administration. You will ensure the correct systems and procedures are in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. You will serve as the principal liaison to the external auditor and will work closely with supervisors to educate on finance and accounting procedures and explore how finance functions can support program operations. You will prepare, analyze, and interpret periodic financial reports for management information and control and will assist the budget preparation process.

    Other responsibilities include:

    • Reviews and ensures accuracy of data posted to the accounts payable system; reviews and ensures accuracy of accounts receivable invoices, receipts, requisitions, purchase orders and other documents. Ensures payment by designated due date, taking early payment discount when possible/economical.
    • Reviews and ensures accuracy of account balances and monthly reconciliation process (i.e. bank deposits, withdrawals, transfer of funds, etc.).
    • Oversees the activities of any supplier to which functions have been outsourced.
    • Performs general ledger operations; prepares journal entries, monitors budget transactions, checks departmental financial accounts/budgets to assure funds are available for purchases.
    • Oversees the functioning of the payroll system and issuance of staff payroll working closely with IS Staff and HR Manager on payroll processes.
    • Records cash receipts in a timely manner and make prompt deposits.
    • Assists with the creation and development of the annual budget, and tests for achievability; creates variances between actual and budgeted results; report the reasons for the variances to management.
    • Develops/runs reports aimed at analyzing profitability across cost centers, service lines, and provider staff.
    • Assists in preparation of the annual report.
    • Balances and files quarterly taxes with the Internal Revenue Service; validates and balances W-2's at the end of the calendar year.
    • Represents the agency to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, foundation executives, auditors, public officials, etc.
    • Remains up-to-date on nonprofit audit best practices and state/federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
    • Assists external auditors with the examination of agency financial statements and provides all necessary information.
    • Maintains all financial record-keeping including: a chart of accounts that fulfills the record keeping needs of the business; an orderly filing system for all paper-based accounting records, including a system of document archiving and destruction; and a comprehensive system of controls over all accounting functions.
    • Ensures timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for federal and state funders, foundations, and Board of Directors.
    • Supervises the activity of assigned staff; establishes priorities, assigns duties, and coordinates projects.
    • Participates in the recruitment, selection, hiring, and orientation of assigned staff.
    • Evaluates and counsels assigned staff relative to the performance of assigned duties.

    To be considered for this role, you will have:

    • Bachelor's degree in accounting, required
    • 5 plus years of related experience
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Knowledge of GAAP and Not-For-Profit Accounting
    • Bachelor's degree and CPA, preferred
