Diesel Mechanic performs inspection, maintenance, repairs, and overhauls of diesel engines. Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems. Being a Diesel Mechanic utilizes computer electronics systems to interpret failure modes. Replaces and/or refurbishes parts. Additionally, Diesel Mechanic maintains maintenance logs according to requirements. Ensures services provided follow all quality standards and safety procedures. May perform DOT annual inspections on vehicles. Typically requires a high school diploma. Typically requires Commercial Driver License (CDL) - Class A. Typically requires a Certificate in Automotive & Diesel Technology. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Diesel Mechanic works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.     As a Field Diesel Mechanic, your more typical responsibilities will include:

    • Inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, adjusting, and maintaining construction on various types of heavy equipment
    • Utilizing problem-solving resources such as DTAC, technical manuals, personal skills, and experience in order to perform diagnosis of equipment problems
    • Requesting proper parts needed for repair through the parts department and keeping track of machine status
    • Planning and executing the sequence of repairs
    • Conducting engine underhauls, head gaskets, rear axle replacement, hydraulic valves and pumps, rock shafts, and transmission repairs
    • Preparing accurate inspection and service reports, and maintaining other records as required
    • Following company policies and government regulations
    • Keeping work areas clean and orderly, while complying with company safety standards 

    As a Field Diesel Mechanic, you will be working both in the shop and out at customer locations (with occasional work required outside in varying weather conditions) to repair, conduct maintenance, and address any customer concerns or questions. 

    Job Requirements Include:

    • High School diploma or equivalent experience. 3  years of mechanic experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing heavy construction/forestry equipment.
    • Vocation or technical degree, or equivalent work experience or training.
    • Knowledge of service department operations, heavy equipment technology department operations, and heavy equipment technology in general.
    • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
