    Job Purpose:
    The Heinz Hall Stage Technical Director provides technical direction and information as required on all Pittsburgh Symphony performances, Broadway productions, Heinz Hall Presents events, co-produced events and rentals.  The Technical Director advances shows, budgets show expenses, oversees, schedules and supervises all stage labor, researches and purchases equipment and supplies required for stage operations, ensures stage safety and works cooperatively with Heinz Hall Management staff and all PSO departments and staff.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Advances stage technical requirements for all performances, creates expense budgets, stagehand expense forecasts, based on Rider specification or performance requirements. Secures production equipment and services required beyond what Heinz Hall can provide.
    • Schedules Stagehands, Hair & Makeup, Wardrobe and Teamsters as needed to support stage productions.  Reviews and approves all payrolls for internal processing and reviews and obtains approval on payrolls with traveling show head carpenters or production managers.
    • Organizes and supervises all stagehand work and/or delegates as appropriate to accomplish assigned tasks.
    • Responsible for Stage Safety for all performances, reports and follows up on any accidents or incidents related to safety and is a member of the Heinz Hall Safety Committee.
    • Works as an integral part of the Hall Management Department team, lending expertise to work, creativity in solving problems facing Heinz Hall and the PSO.
    • Prepares and monitors budgets for stage operations and any capital expenditures required to ensure ongoing functioning of stage physical plant, equipment, operations and training required or desired.
    • Reconciles and approves stage related invoices, contracts for goods or services and Purchasing Card Statements for all Heinz Hall Stagehands.
    • Researches all stage purchases, secures purchase orders, places orders, receives and/or picks up acquisitions of equipment and supplies and maintains inventory control.
    • Utilizes computer and office equipment required to send/receive email, check scheduling programs, conduct research on the internet, respond to Internet requests for technical information, create spreadsheets in Excel, documents in Word & Powerpoint, create and approve payrolls, participate in Zoom and Teams virtual meetings, etc.
    • Models and demonstrates exceptional customer service to internal staff members, PSO soloists, conductors, performers, musicians, promoters, renters, Broadway Touring companies, Cultural District partners, and the general public.
    Required Education, Experience and Abilities:
    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience required.
    • Experience in advancing stage performances technical and logistical requirements.
    • Experience in all technical aspects of stage operations.
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
    • Supervisory experience.
    • Ability to meet deadlines and perform well under pressure.
    • Ability and willingness to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends.
    • Must be member IATSE Local 3 or be willing to join IATSE Local 3.
    • Computer and office equipment skills required.
    • Ability to demonstrate superior internal and external customer service skills.
    Preferred Education, Experience and Abilities:
    • Experience in scheduling stagehands, placing calls for Key & Extra hands from the Local and compiling payrolls.
    • Previous experience as Technical Director or equivalent role.
    • Ability to operate video switcher & computer and to load and edit PowerPoint files.
    • Ability to problem solve individually and in team setting.
    • Ability to assume at least one of the key Heinz Hall houseman roles, light board operator/stage electrician, sound board operator/sound man, stage carpenter/rigger.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Able to perform typical stagehand duties.
    • Ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to operate related equipment, i.e., computer, copier, scanner.
