As part of the Maryland State Department of Education, the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) provides services to assist students with disabilities prepare for the work world, vocational rehabilitation services to assist adults with significant disabilities who are seeking to enter or reenter the workforce, and the adjudication of Social Security disability claims for the citizens of Maryland.

    POSITION DUTIES

    There are multiple positions available. These important roles make professional decisions regarding the level of impairment, the capacity for work, and the vocational rehabilitation potential of applicants with disabilities under the Social Security Act. The positions efficiently process adult and child initial and reconsideration claims, as well as initial continuing disability review claims.� Position duties include:� Determines eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits and Supplemental Security Income Payments.� Secures appropriate medical, vocational and psychological documentation as required by established federal standards.� Provides general information about Disability Determination Services.� Uses medical terminology to accurately describe impairments.� Evaluates evidence to determine the degree and severity of disabilities in each electronic case.� Makes recommendations to award or deny benefits.� Writes determinations and defends the assessments.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree. Experience: None.

    DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Preference will be given to applicants�who possess the following preferred qualifications.�Include clear and specific information on your application regarding�your qualifications. 1. At least 9 credits of completed coursework from an accredited college or university in health, biomedicine, human anatomy/physiology, psychology, or psychiatry 2. Conducting research, completing projects, and/or participating in internships in health/mental health-related fields 3. Work experience in human services and/or case management including providing direct services to clients

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    Job offers and access to Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) systems, data, information, and/or premises are contingent upon you passing the SSA suitability process. A suitability determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials.
